Just out of curiosity is it possible for an Eastern Catholic to be elected pope? And, I guess on the same note, are there any Eastern Catholics in the College of Cardnals, can there be?
There are a number of cardinals in the Eastern Catholic Churches, see here:Just out of curiosity is it possible for an Eastern Catholic to be elected pope? And, I guess on the same note, are there any Eastern Catholics in the College of Cardnals, can there be?
This was discussed in another recent thread.Just out of curiosity is it possible for an Eastern Catholic to be elected pope? And, I guess on the same note, are there any Eastern Catholics in the College of Cardnals, can there be?
Patriarch Béchara is eligible to be elected Pope as well. In fact, the only legal requirement is that the elect be a baptised male Catholic. If he is not already of episcopal rank, he will be consecrated as a bishop by the Dean of the College of Cardinals, but obviously Patriarch Béchara doesn’t need that.I think there were many Eastern Catholic popes in the past
its interesting to see a new one , maybe the Maronite Patriarch , he is very faithful person but I am not sure if non cardinal can be elected pope

I think it had been several centuries since we had a non-Italian pope until Blessed John Paul II broke the pattern.Yes, and I think there was even recently (by that I mean the last century), but I can’t remember his name.
Indeed, there were several Popes from the East (of Greek descent) in early Church history, but the notion of being “Eastern Catholic” as we would define that today was really not applicable. The rise of Constantinople was instrumental, as election to the Papacy required the consent of the Byzantine Emperor.I think there were many Eastern Catholic popes in the past
Yeah I suspect the list somewhat as the source is not that relible but it was the only listI could find quickly and some on the list are truely eastern.I dont think Gregory the Great was of any Eastern Tradtion, being that he is one of Latin Fathers…
I believe he would be incardinated into the Latin Church because as Pope he is the Bishop of Rome, which is a diocese of the Latin Church. The same goes for western priests administering to eastern parishes and vice versa. Now, would he (Eastern Rite Pope) stay in the same Rite? or would he switch Rites to Latin? I believe he would stay in the same Rite, but I have no sources to back this up at the moment…
This makes sense. I believe you are right. In any case, we are all the same religion, still Catholic!I believe he would be incardinated into the Latin Church because as Pope he is the Bishop of Rome, which is a diocese of the Latin Church. The same goes for western priests administering to eastern parishes and vice versa.
