Are you having several periods?

Never mind.

The Finnish Orthodox Church did a study on this and recommended, to their own Church, the Kiss of Peace, incensing the whole Church and the like.

There is one parish iin Toronto that has the Kiss of Peace at the words “Let us love one another …” prior to the recitation of the Creed (without the Filioque - sorry, that belongs on another thread altogether . . .).

In fact, the Armenians and the Assyrians have always kept this in their liturgies, if I’m not mistaken. But only men exchange it with men and women with women.

Nikolai Gogol wrote a beautiful book of his meditations on the Divine Liturgy and when he got to this point, he said that in ancient days, the Kiss of Peace was always exchanged (as it still is among the clergy when the Divine Liturgy is concelebrated). He wrote that, at that time, even though the actual Kiss of Peace is no longer given, we should open our hearts to everyone in Church with love and forgiveness.

The Kiss of Peace in the Latin NO Rite was actually taken from the Eastern tradition . . .

However, it tends to become a kind of “let’s shake hands buddy” rather than the deeply spiritual act of love in Christ that it is meant to be.

In my opinion…the Liturgy is part of Holy Tradition…we are given Holy Tradition and it is our job to preserve it and hand it on to the next generation…it is NOT our place to change Holy Tradition (except in very few instances). The Liturgy was given to us WITHOUT the kiss of peace among the laity. We have no business messing with Holy Tradition! 😃

The sign of Peace can be given as a kiss, a hand shake or a hug. What must be remembered is to keep it respectful and reverent.

This is an evolved Holy Tradition clearly. From what Fr. Taft writes  the Kiss of Peace amongst the laity was part of the rather raucous elements in Divine Liturgy earlier on. 😃

My own experience, limited, mostly in No CA is that I haven’t experienced it passed amongst the laity, Orthodox or ECC, only seen the clergy give each other the Kiss. I’ve only experienced it here amongst the laity at the Assyrian-Chaldean Catholic parish near San Francisco where it was passed by the deacon or altar servers from row/pew to row/pew.
