So is the only difference the acceptance of the primacy of the Pope?
I’ve done some reading and it seems as though Eastern (and Roman, in fact) Catholics believe the same thing as the Orthodox in relation to the Filioque. The east and west just explain it differently.

Douay-Rheims Bible (The best, if I may so myself)

That they all may be one, as thou, Father, in me, and I in thee; that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

I’ll be honest when I say I’m not sure of the exact differences that exist.

From my Catholic friends, they state that the only big difference is the issue of the Papacy.

However, my Orthodox friends have a much, MUCH longer list. They say not only the Papacy, but the issue of the Filioque, the purpose and use of the Sacraments, the place and nature of Mary, etc etc etc.

Suppose it is how you look at things. I would say that perhaps at the core of things there is much similarity. However, there is much more to deal with than just the Papacy- whether that means clearing up misconceptions of doctrine, or actually dealing with doctrinal differences.

🤷

I suspect it varies from Eastern Catholic to Eastern Catholic, maybe sometimes without the Eastern Catholic in question fully realizing where their beliefs differ from those of the Orthodox. Just my impression. Also remember the Orthodox aren’t a monolithic group either.

Certainly in any case you will find those who insist Eastern Catholics believe everything the way the Orthodox do with the single exception of the primacy of the Pope (and even on the subject of the Pope they can sometimes make statements that seem fishy to us Latins). Even the subject of the Ecumenical Councils after the seventh is controversial for some of them.

In my experience when a Latin Rite Catholic suggests certain things defined in these later centuries are obligatory for the whole Church to believe you can get a lot if ire from some Eastern Catholics or their hardcore supporters. :o

Well, we believe in the primacy of the Pope or Bishop of Rome. We do not believe however in the supremacy of the Pope. As others have said, were Rome to once again become in communion with us – she may be at the very bottom of the diptchys below Metropolitan Jonah of the OCA (Orthodox Church in America).

That however is still unclear, and will be a matter of deciding. The Ecumenical Patriarch currently has a lot of problems in trying to survive in Constantinople, as the Greek community there has gotten smaller and smaller over the years. Please feel free to search the forum, there’s a lot of information on our differences both on this Eastern Catholicism section, and in the Non-Catholic Religions section.

I too once came to this board and asked several of our very knowledgeable Catholic posters some questions. It helped me to gain a greater understanding of the Catholic position on things, but I ultimately sided with the Orthodox and it is here that I remain.

In Christ,
Andrew
