I’m just curious on other Eastern Catholic opinions but do you watch EWTN even though it’s a western catholic channel? Don’t get me wrong there are some times where they have eastern catholic programs, but I’m just curious.

God Bless

No, not because its not Eastern, but because I’m cheap 😛

I was considering it in the past but I don’t really watch a lot of TV outside of the usual sports programs and the occasional movie, and most of the programming doesn’t interest me much.

I do enjoy watching certain programming on EWTN (daily Masses; Papal Masses on Great Feasts; documentaries on church history, faith and the saints, etc.), but do wish they could offer more on “both lungs”. That said, IMO they do genuinely embrace the Eastern Catholics in many ways, so no complaints in that regard.

I have heard that there are some plans for additional episodes of “Light of the East” - we hope!

Blessings!

My answer would be pretty much as Byz Cantor`s, wishing there were more Eastern Catholic programming but I do think Father Mitch does a pretty good job of mentioning the Eastern Catholic on a fairly regular basis. Considering the junk on TV I think I could do worse than view EWTN occasionally.

There is Light of the East which has an Eastern Catholic orientation. I only wish it could be aired at a better time. It’s usually on about 2 am.

I have also seen the Maronite DL.

I contacted Fr. Mike Sopoliga and Fr. Joseph Bertha a couple of years ago and asked if there were plans for more shows, after I also heard there were plans. One of them wrote back and at that point it didn’t sound like there would be more. There should be. I think it’s an excellent series, good content for anyone unfamiliar with ECCs… For a while it was running in a continuous loop week after week. They stopped selling the VHS of the series but I found a good used copy through amazon, which was preowned by some Latin nuns. 🙂 I hope to copy the videos to DVD eventually…

I watch a fair amount, or listen to the same shows on Catholic Radio which we have here. I’m a catechist in a Latin parish and I find the EWTN programming very helpful. (My current enthusiasm is re Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter established by HH Benedict XVI on January 1, 2012 for those groups of Anglicans in the US wanting to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. 👍)

Fr. Mitch is of course bi-ritual and tends to remember ECCs and Orthodox in his teaching and Q & A. Also, I find the Fr. Benedict Groeschel will often mention Orthodox and Eastern Catholics. I’ve heard Fr. Trigilio and Fr. Levis on Web of Faith bring up ECCs and Orthodox. My point in this is only that on EWTN generally when I hear the hosts speak about ECCs they do so with accuracy. I’m not implying that we’re included as much as we ought to be.

“Vision of Freedom” about the persecuted Ukrainian Catholic Church which aired again in July is a very well done program, although unfortunately I think several decades old. I’m not sure I’ve seen EC Liturgy other than Maroinite on EWTN but they have a number of specials on ECCs which they rerun, usually very late at night. The weekly programs “The Suffering Church” and “Where God Weeps” generally are focused on the persecutions of our Churches in the homelands.

I’ve said here many times, when they air shows that focus on the ECCs it’s important that we write and say thank you for the program… and that we hope there will be more EC content in the future. Viewer feedback: viewer@ewtn.com

I agree! Pope John Paul the second prayed that western Catholics can learn more about the eastern rites. So how will that countinue if there’s not any eastern Catholics on ewtn you know? Don’t get me wrong they do mention the rites but rarely.
