Given that issues surrounding the role of the Papacy in regards to Eastern Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy are constantly coming up in this sub-forum, I’d like to suggest that those interested in the topic listen to the plenaries of Orientale Lumen Conference XV available at:
ancientfaith.com/specials/orientale_lumen_xv_conference
In particular I’d like to direct folks to the talk given by Fr. Archimandrite Robert Taft, S.J., a Russian Greek Catholic priest, historian and scholar. Fr. Taft takes a very frank look at the papacy, its Apostolicity, and misconceptions on both sides concern its role in the Church. He also challenges both Catholics and Orthodox to reexamine the history of our divisions honestly, humbly and objectively in order to clear up the misperceptions that have done nothing but fed the division. As food for thought he also offers suggestions on reforms within both Catholicism and Orthodoxy that ought to take place in order to foster the reestablishment of full communion. You may agree or disagree with him, but at least it’ll get people thinking about it.
Fr. Taft is always insightful, always frank, and I personally find his brutal honesty at times very entertaining (as well as spot on).
