Hello,

I’m Russian Catholic without a parish of my rite… I’m a little confused about the Friday fast.

In the Latin rite, it’s no meat.

For the Russian Orthodox, it’s usually strict fast, except this Friday fish is allowed I think cause it’s after Easter.

I don’t actually know which calendar I’m supposed to follow… I need to speak to my priest about that.

But - generally on Fridays, what kind of fast do Eastern Catholics follow? like Russian Catholics? if strict fast - does that mean no oil, no cooked food then?

Most Russian Catholic follow the OCA guidelines for fasting. Wednesday and Friday are no meat, fish, dairy, wine or oil…cooked food is allowed. Not sure why fish would be allowed this Friday…my copy of the OCA calendar says Friday is a regular fast day.

thanks!
Do you follow the Julian calendar or the Gregorian or revised Julian calendar? I think the fish allowed day is for Julian calendar because there it’s between Easter and Pentecost. 🙂

Regarding the no oil rule yet cooked food is allowed… I was going to go to an Indian restaurant with some friends this Friday and get a vegan dish, (that is cooked) but now I think it has oil and I’m wondering if I should transfer this to Saturday or something. 🤷

I like the OCA follow the Revised Julian calendar.

Friday (tomorrow) is a day when wine and oil are permitted on the Russian calendar…no fish though.

Fridays and Wedensdays of Pascha do allow wine and oil.

I take that to mean that olive oil only is dissalowed not all oil like corn oil, or sesame oil.

I find that this depends on who you ask. There are some proponents that any and all types of oil are to be avoided, although “olive oil only” is the most popular.

There is a margarine that is fasting. It is called Nucoa and has no dairy or milk derivitives at all.

Originally made for Orthodox Jewish people who cannot eat meat and milk at the same time.
