Greetings all,

Because of the virtue of his office, can Pope Benedict XVI celebrate the Eastern liturgical rites of the Catholic Church? Have Latin rite Popes of the past celebrated or concelebrated any Eastern liturgies?

Thanks,
ZP

Technically, the Pope is the one person who is omni-ritual, meaning that he may celebrate in any Rite he so chooses. But of course it is rare that any Pope celebrates in other than the Roman Rite.

FWIW, in addition to the two previously mentioned, I believe PP Pius XI offered the Byzantine DL (Italo-Greek usage in Greek IIRC) publicly in Rome at least once, sometime in the 1930s.

Very interesting. Now, is the Pope the only one who can celebrate any rite he wants?
A local Byzantine Catholic priest in my area celebrates daily Mass at a RC parish, but I know he did receive permission from the Archbishop to do so. This leads me to believe that permission would need to be given (for those other than the Pope I would think).

The local bishop grants the faculties.

Since the Pope is every bishop’s boss, he will always have faculties.

As Princes of the Church, I believe* one of the privileges of Cardinals is that they may celebrate the Liturgy in any place or territory. I do not know if they may celebrate in any rite?

(* And of course, I may be completely mistaken)

Yes. More specifically, the local bishop grants faculties for saying mass in his particular rite. (At least that’s my understanding.) Hence, even a bishop can’t necessarily (the pope being an exception) say a mass in any rite he wants without another bishop’s permission.

I’ve never heard that before, but it is very interesting if true.

As long as the bishop/pope who is doing the celebrating knows what he is doing . . .

Oh yes, thanks for making the clarification.
