Eastern Mysticism for Kindle/iBooks?

Hello,

I am interested in reading some mystical works from the Eastern Christendom side of things. I am well-aware of what’s available from a Western/Roman standpoint (Teresa de Avila, Juan de la Cruz, Meister Eckhart, etc.) but am not so familiar with Orthodox mysticism.

Unfortunately, a lot of great works and authors like Climacus, Palamas, Gregory of Nyssa’s “Life of Moses” don’t seem to be available yet for mobile reading. Maybe some of you are more aware of some resources that I’m not.

I’ll accept any suggestions and sort the wheat from the chaff later.
 
There aren’t publishers willing to make them into e-books just yet. I think Conciliar Press is starting to come out with e-books, not sure which e-books they have available right now but you can give their website a look-see.
 
I’m not a Kindle user yet (although I have purchased some Kindle docs from Amazon that I read on my PC), but have you every been to the Christian Classics Ethereal Library website?

FYI - while you can read everything online or sometimes via download (*.pdf, etc.), they are now offering some docs in Kindle format. There is a link that will take you to Amazon if the particular work is available.

At any rate, there is a wealth of information on this site, including many reference works of the early fathers and doctors of the Church, as well as more modern saints and theologians.

I’m torturing myself now reading through the Summa Theologica (available in all its spendor and glory online only).

Glad you posted this topic. It’s one that I will definetly keep an eye on. If I find any books or something that has to do with Eastern related things, I’ll post them in here. Now that I am interested and am learning about the Eastern Church I will be on the look out.

You didn’t post it for me, but I have to thank you for that post. I didn’t know CCEL sold Kindle versions.

I just bought the Homilies of St. John Chrysostom on Acts and Romans… much easier to justify spending $4 than $50. 🙂

I also just discovered that the Kindle can display Greek characters. None of my other e-readers could, so I just assumed it couldn’t. 😃
 
Man, my tablet is a PlayBook and it doesn’t have a Kindle e-reader. I’m missing out here 😦

I’m really glad! Guess it’s time to get a Kindle!
 
Both kindle & nook are offering the complete Philokalua for 99 cents.

What is the Philokalia, it was mentioned a great deal in the Way of a Pilgrim. I can only guess it is a spirtual classic in the Eastern Churches.

So how do I find St. John Crystostom’s sermons? Just type it in search?

I found the sermons by going to the “store” link and selecting kindle. It then links to Amazon.
Beware that they have a long list of books, a great many Protestant. Most of the Catholic and Orthodox ones seemed at the very bottom of the list.

The Philokalia is a collection of writings on the Eastern Christian practice of Hesychism (a form of mysticism which aims to fullfull the commandment to pray without ceasing). At this point, as far as I know, it hasn’t yet been translated completely into English, but the bulk of it has been.
It isn’t a book the bulk of people need worry about, although it is quite an interesting one.
