Ah, I see. I really had no idea that other Eastern churches besides Eastern Catholics prayed the Stations at all. Shows what I know! 😊

I merely speak of my limited knowledge of things. Alas, I am but a man! šŸ™‚
No problem. We are all on a journey of learning.

Btw, do Lutherans have the Stations of the Cross at all?

Blessings,
Marduk

These documents are for furthering the efforts of Christian understanding in mutual respect and love, but do not in and of themselves substantiate any claim to a shared faith beyond or above doctrinal divisions, which remain so long as Rome’s doctrines separate it from the other apostolic communions.
Exactly.

Are you saying our faith is in common, but our expression of that faith separates us?
I am saying that we are very far apart—in theology and doctrine. But I agree that the discussion must continue without compromise.

You see…we agree that the discussion must continue without compromise. In the end we will recognize plainly the action of The Holy Spirit.

Mardukm - you’re the only person I’ve talked to that believe the Oriental Orthodox are closer in faith to Catholics than to Eastern Orthodox. I’m not knowledgeable about OO, I just find this interesting.

I don’t believe I’ve ever claimed that the OO are closer in Faith to Catholics than to EO. All I’ve ever done is to point out certain features in OO spirituality and theology that are indeed closer to Catholicism (particularly Latin Catholicism) than to EO’xy, but I readily admit that there are certain matters on which OO are closer to the EO than to Latin Catholics.

As repeatedly stated to brother Dzheremi, I believe that given all the evidence, the most one can say that the CC is JUST AS close to the OOC as the EO are.

Do Lutherans pray the Stations? Yes and no. To be quite honest, it depends on the individual parish. In all the parishes I’ve grown up in (which amounts to 4- my youth is showing 😊), none of them did pray it publicly. However, I know many who pray it privately at home. For far too long, too many Lutherans have denied our liturgical heritage in order to appear ā€œnot Catholicā€ (though this goes against the whole point of the Lutheran reformation, but I digress). However we are recovering these ancient and profitable practices. Though when we do pray them, we tend to leave out the Hail Mary’s and such šŸ˜‰

Dear brother ThatOneGuy92,

Thank you for your response. I feel blessed to have your acquaintance. I have a question:

From what I know, Luther was rather devoted to the Blessed Mother. Did he object to the ā€œHail Mary?ā€

What is the Lutheran position on asking for the intercession of saints in heaven?

Blessings,
Marduk

To be quite honest, I am not sure this is the place to discuss such things. After all, this is the Eastern Catholicism forum šŸ˜‰

However, to put things quickly and cleanly-
  1. Luther was at one time extremely devoted to the Blessed Mother. His commentary on the Magnificat is amazing. However as his views and theology changed, his views on the BVM changed as well. By his death, he argued that while Mary is perhaps the greatest of all Christians, we need to focus on Jesus more.
  2. Lutherans officially believe that while the Saints and Angels do intercede for the Church in general (and possibly for believers individually), we have no clear example or exhortation from Scripture to ask for their intercession. Thus, while the Saints may intercede, we may not ask their intercession.
If you would like to discuss this in more depth, I’m more than game. Perhaps we should split and create a new thread? Who knows- maybe we’ll get around to talking about the Pope! And I know how you can’t resist a good papacy talk šŸ˜‰ 😃
