hi eveyone this is prob a stupid question but I thought id ask it anyway.
A good 2 years + ago I got a Latin Catholic priest to
bless some salt with a Blessing from the Roman Ritual…its now been over 2 years and my suply of blessed salt is running low…Can I get my own Melkite Catholic Priest to Bless salt according to Roman Ritual (I dont think Eastern Catholics have a procedure for blessing salt??) or do i have to find a Latin Priest for that?..Im assuming that a Catholic Priest of any rite may Bless an Object according to the norms of another rite???

I have absolutely no idea if the Byzantine tradition has a blessing for salt. (While the Maronite and Syriac books have a variety of blessing for comestibles, I do not recall anything there for salt in particular.)

My suggestion? Ask the Melkite priest. If he is unable to do it (or is uncomfortable doing it), he will likely know a Latin Rite priest who would be willing and able to help.

It comes from 2 Kings 2 as a purification of the water for liturgical use. As death never more sprang from the water that Elisha purified, so death with never spring from the baptism water so purified.
19
Once the inhabitants of the city complained to Elisha, “The site of the city is fine indeed, as my lord can see, but the water is bad and the land unfruitful.”
20
“Bring me a new bowl,” Elisha said, “and put salt into it.” When they had brought it to him,
21
he went out to the spring and threw salt into it, saying, “Thus says the LORD, 'I have purified this water. Never again shall death or miscarriage spring from it.’”
22
And the water has stayed pure even to this day, just as Elisha prophesied.

**I have absolutely no idea if the Byzantine tradition has a blessing for salt. **

**As a matter of fact, there is one!

I discovered that the blessing of sick animals in the BOOK OF NEEDS published by St. Tikhon’s calls for the animals to be given blessed salt, as well as holy water in their food.

This is the first time I’ve heard of blessed salt in the Byzantine tradition.

Alas, I do not have this book at hand, so I can’t give the blessing yet, but be patient, and I will.**

aww thank u…nothing wrong with a latin blessing but in this case I think a Byzantine Blessing would be more appropiate

O God our Savior, Who, having come to Jericho to the Prophet Elisha, healed the harmful water with salt: As the same Lord bless this salt and change it into a sacrifice of gladness. For You are our God, and to You we ascribe glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.**

There is a blessing for salt; it’s done every pascha!

Thank u for the information that every christian should knew:)

In the Extraordinary Form of the Latin Rite salt isn’t merely blessed, but rather exorcised! I have a batch of exorcised salt at home. It’s a more elaborate ritual than a simple blessing. The priest, with the authority of the Church, “exorcises” the salt effectively removing it from Satan’s dominion (the god of this fallen world) and transforming it into a conduit of grace to fight Satan and his demons. I have heard of accounts wherein possessed perons (or those deeply involved in the occult) could not cross a line of exorcised salt. 😛

Our help is in the name of the Lord
who made Heaven and Earth
God’s creature salt
I cast out the demon from you
(make the signs of the cross)
by the Living God
by the true God
by the Holy God
by God who ordered you to be thrown into the water spring by Eliseus
to heal it of its barrenness
may you be a purifies salt
a means of health for those who believe
a medicine for body and soul for all who make use of you
may all evil fancies of the fowl fiend his malice and his cunning
be driven afar from the place where you are sprinkled
and let every unclean spirit be repulsed by him who is coming to judge both the living and the dead and the world by fire
almighty and everlasting god we humbly appeal to your mercy and goodness to graciously bless this creature salt which you have given for mankind’s use
may all who use it find in it a remedy for body and soul and may everything that it touches or sprinkles be freed from uncleanness and any influence of the evil spirit through Christ our Lord.
