Did such great Eastern saints as St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. John Chrysostom, or St. Anthony the Great ever make any definitive statements about papal primacy?

If so, can you please post the quotes?

Primacy and supremacy are not the same thing. You will find many examples of the former, but not so many of the latter.

You will find some here. Look under the heading Church & Papacy. Hope this helps you out.

God bless,

Dear brother Wynd,

The CC and OO have a different conception of “supremacy” than the EO. To the EO, supremacy means absolute power. To the CC and OO, supremacy only refers to the highest power, yet its exercise is regulated by divine and canonical obligations.

Yes, this is true, but it is often difficult to attempt to discuss this when it is met with hostility. It is almost as if the only traditions and writings of the fathers that are ever adhered to are the Eastern ones. Any Western Father on the subject is always brushed away as a peculiar opinion.

Great link, ZP. Thanks.
No problem 👍

You might want to check out this book:

Faith of the Early Fathers by William A. Jurgens. It comes in three volumes. It has the writings of many, if not all, of the early Church Fathers (both Latin and Greek Fathers). In the back of the book there is a Doctrinal Index. You can find, for example, Papal primacy back there and it will refer you to where it is found in the book.

Here is volume 1 and volume 2 online. Only problem is that it is not in its entirery, but it may come in handy for now.

I have heard St. Maximos the Confessor was a strong supporter of the primacy of the Roman see.

‘The extremities of the earth, and all in every part of it who purely and rightly confess the Lord look directly towards the most holy Roman Church and its confession and faith, as it were to a sun of unfailing light, awaiting from it the bright radiance of the sacred dogmas of our Fathers according to what the six inspired and holy councils have purely and piously decreed, declaring most expressly the symbol of faith. For from the coming down of the incarnate Word amongst us, all the Churches in every part of the world have held that greatest Church alone as their base and foundation, seeing that according to the promise of Christ our Saviour, the gates of hell do never prevail against it, that it has the keys of a right confession and faith in Him, that it opens the true and only religion to such as approach with piety, and shuts up and locks every heretical mouth that speaks injustice against the Most High.’
