Easterners concelebrating with other Easterners

Hi there.

I thought that when Easterners concelebrate with Latins, they use the cope and don’t wear their Eastern vestments (I guess except for when an Easterner is being consecrated a Bishop).

But in the opening Mass for the Middle East synod, the Eastern bishops wear their full Eastern vestments. It looks beautiful but I thought that’s contrary to the rule. How is this customarily done?
 
The rule is that clergy should be vested according to their own tradition. So yes, it was done correctly in Rome. 🙂

Oh, thanks for the correction.

Beautiful vestments. Frankly our Latin ones are usually so drab.

Thought I saw it done that way when Easterners did Mass with the Pope. I guess I just don’t know enough about it to be able to tell, usually it’s so far away when it’s on TV. Yeah… I have to plead ignorance on this. Shame that us Latins usually don’t know anything about Easterns.

Priests and bishops of the Armenian Church and most of the Churches of the Syrian Rite use a vestment that is quite similar to the cope as their equivalent of the Chasuble. So one could get that impression.

Our vestments are great.

It’s the hippie* vestments that some of us have used since the 1960’s that are drab.
  • Okay, not actually hippie. And yes, these men are acting as priests when they wear them. However, the older style vestments are better.
 
You may have also seen Maronite bishops, who wear vestments that are very similar to Roman bishops.

I have to agree with WetCatechumen, too many modern Catholic priests wear very plain vestments, but they can be very beautiful and ornate.

The first photo is street dress. The only thing “Latin” that the late Mar Francis is wearing is a “house dress” (i.e. a cassock). This is the same as is done by the Chaldeans, Syro-Malabars, and Syriac CC.

In the second photo, the only thing that “Latin” that Mar Gregorious is wearing is the mitre (of which I am NOT a fan). This is also worn by the Chaldeans, Syriac CC, Syro-Malabars, Armenians, and Copts.

I think I spoke too hastily, you’re right, those were the only pieces in common with Roman dress. 👍
