What are the three branches of the Catholic church and where are they found? I understand the hierarchy and confused that with being the branches. I am a RCIA student and my children are taking CCD classes. We are facing a quizz and I can not find the explanation in my readings.

I don’t know if this is what you mean, but the Catholic Church includes the Church Militant (the Church on earth, still fighting evil and trying to do good), the Church Suffering (the souls in purgatory) and the Church Triumphant (those in heaven).

The Anglican church teaches the “Branch theory” that there are three “branches” of the Catholic Church the Roman catholic church, the Orthodox church, and the Anglican church. The Catholic Church does not accept this or teach it.

If it’s not the three parts of the Church Universal as noted above. The Church on Earth, The Church in Heaven, and the Church in Purgatory.

Good question.

It’s already been answered above but here goes with maybe a little addition:

You might be getting the “3 sources of revelation” mixed up with the “3 branches of the Church”

Revelation is from “Scripture, Tradition and Magesterium.” It’s important to remember that in a way, Scripture is part of Tradition, but it’s easy enough to distinguish. The Magesterium interprets both Scripture and historic Church teaching (Tradition). Magesterium is also called Heirarchy.

Then the other 3 what it appears we are calling “branches” are the **Church Militant, the Church Suffering, and the Church Triumphant. **

Are those called “Branches” also??

We have so many “threes” and it’s difficult to keep them straight. I suspect you are a little more correct in your reply than our other correct to perhaps a lesser degree replies about militant, suffering, triumphant.

The Universal Church consists of the following:

The Church Militant
The Church Suffering
The Church Triumphant

If you go with the Anglican anwser you’re likely to be confusing Anglican Catholic for Catholic. That is not orthodox Catholic teaching. So the question is in light of the answer, lol, what would the question be?

The part of the question that asks “where are they found” leads me to think it refers to the traditional teaching on the Church given by puzzleannie and mdstanzel.
