Don’t forget to pick up an easy Plenary Indulgence today, Dec 31, by publicly reciting the Te Deum in thanksgiving for the year and fulfilling the usual conditions:
  • be in a state of grace when you say it
  • have no attachment to sin
  • go to confession within 20 days before or after
  • receive Communion within a few days before or after (you can use your Communion for the Holy Day of Obligation)
  • pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.
You can say the Te Deum on Dec 31 in any church open to the public, or any other public place, you just need to recite it out loud.
You can keep the Plenary indulgence for yourself or give it away to a soul in Purgatory as a New Years gift.

Here’s the Te Deum in English and Latin:

Here’s another version in a bit more modern English:

No, it’s a long prayer.
Go to the links I posted and you’ll see the whole thing.
Part of it is said at Mass (you’ll recognize it) but there’s a lot more to it than just that part.
You need to say the whole thing.

We all are sinners.
It’s hard to tell if we have attachment to sin. Usually, the firm resolve to not sin and making sincere effort to avoid it is about the best we can do.
I usually say right before Communion, something like “Lord, I reject sin, I don’t want to sin, please help me not sin” followed by the Act of Contrition, and I figure I’ve done what I can.

If you don’t fulfill the condition you get a partial indulgence and we don’t know how much, so even if you still had some attachment to sin despite your best efforts, you could still get 99 percent.
