These types of physical mortification should only be done with the guidance of a spiritual director.

It’s not necessarily just macho. Super hot foods will, like I said, give one a nice natural high because of the endorphins and other chemicals they trigger. If you can tolerate the heat level then you might just feel awesome for some time after consuming. I’m pretty sure that’s part of what’s motivated man to eat such things over the centuries, the feeling of relaxation you get afterwards.

Yes, I figure when it gets to the point that you need to stay close to a bathroom the next day or wear astronaut diapers, one has gone too far.

Maybe not, but I believe it is a beneficial and uplifting image to use while praying.

(Better than mentally making out my grocery list, which has been my big problem in praying the rosary for … [dare I say it] … for decades … )
The Rosary is my number one way of praying.

Honestly, I enjoyed real spicy foods. I regret that I know have had to give up that after my second stomach transplant.

I have been browsing youtube lately and noticed the tremendous number of videos that make fun of Christians and Catholics. A cartoon or meme now and then in taste is good but what I’m seeing is a downright attack on the Church.

My mindset and heart aren’t in sync as I read Treatise on True Devotion by St. Louis de Montfort.

Sorry for being a stick in the mud.

I totally agree. I don’t believe that spiritual directors would say that is the way to do penance.
