Is it ok to eat meat on Friday, if you play sports and you have a game the next day? I don’t do this but i was just wondering.

Fish and eggs also have lots of protein. Eat those, instead.

Not during Lent. But on Fridays the rest of the year, we’re allowed to eat meat if we chose, but should make some other sacrifice in rememberance of the death of our Lord.

Eating meat the day before a game is not going to improve your performance. Protein is a muscle-builder, and muscle-building occurs over a much longer period of time. Just make sure you eat a good breakfast that morning with plenty of carbohydrates, like pancakes or potatoes.

I recommend you eat only vegetables, and struggle through your match.

If you perform poorly, remember Our King on His Cross - he didn’t perform all that well either. As a matter of fact, from what I remember, He DIED!

I’m not saying give up on those sporting matches during Lent, only recognize that if others choose to ignore His Sacrifice, let them - more glory will come of your obedience to His Church than will EVER come from winning some event on the field.

As a varsity football player, this issue concerns me greatly. What I don’t understand is why you think you need to have meat prior to game day? What you need is carbs, vitamins and plenty of H2O. I don’t see how having lots of protein prior to the big day can be of any help? On the other hand If you’re working out, training hard etc, then protein is a must everyday not just the day before the game. If anything you need protein after the game to feed those muscles as they recover.

If for whatever reason you feel you need protein before game day on a Lenten Friday, eat tuna or eggs. Fish in general is a good source of protein. If you’re still afraid, buy some protein powder. But in all honesty, get those carbs in you, have a nice big pasta meal the day before. Although never have a heavy carb meal on game day though, you won’t have enough time to digest and absorb those carbs, and the carb-loaded meal will just be sitting in your system.

news flash, there are many non-meat sources of protein
If you are looking for excuses to bail on the very light almost non-existent penitential disciplines of the Church, your attitude is such that such practices will not avail much anyhow so why not just skip the whole thing and go on doing what you want. If your idea of the spiritual life is doing the bare minimum to get a passing grade in being a good guy you need a lot more help.

You can honour Him, and get the appropriate nutrition at the same time. If you’re an athelete who plays a sports team of some importance, I would argue that it is your duty to be ready physically. Suffering at the cost of your teammates who are depending on you, seems very irresponsible to me.

This all depends on the team you’re playing on though. If it’s just some house league or for fun league… then yeah, being a little improvished won’t matter. However, if you are playing in a very competitive league, on a team that had tryouts, on a team where everyone literally spends every waking moment thinking about their commitment, then again, it is your duty to be prepared. Part of the sacrifice of Catholic-Athletes is observing the fast, while ensuring that you will be in tip top shape for game day.

Just to who was that directed to?
No one here has said that anyone should bail on any commitment… Even the OP.

This is extremely irresponsible advice that could end in injury to the OP or his team mates. I would never advise anyone to undertake strenuous activity where they need to be mentally and physically prepared, with less that appropriate preparation. That’s just dangerous.

There are so many other ways to observe the Lenten fast from meat and still be prepared for physically demanding sports activity.

And I must say that I commend the OP for asking this question, and shame on those who are accusing him of trying to get off easy. I think it’s great that he’s asking and trying to do the right thing. We only learn by learning, not be being born with the information in our DNA.
