So this Friday as part of Friday penance, I was not going to eat meat. Anway, tonight my mom made pasta and meatballs for dinner and I unfortunately forgot to tel her not to make meatballs for me. What should I do? In this scenario, would I be a sin if I ate the meatballs?

I don’t want to waste food.

Thanks!

You can give up something else in lieu of meat today. Although it might be a little late for that now.

Are you in an area where abstinence from meat is required on Fridays, and will the food really be discarded? If required, skip it, if not, substitute another act of penance.

Say an extra rosary, or something, if you eat the meat.

The Penance doesn’t always have to be an abstaining from something (unless you are in the UK or another nation where the national conference of bishops is requiring you to refrain from meat on Fridays)

Thank you! Do you think saying a Divine Mercy Chaplet would be a sufficient replacement? I don’t really know what else I can give up…

If you live in the United States or Canada, then yes. If you live in England or Wales, I would discuss this with your priest so you know what to do in the future.

If you’re under the age of 18, I believe you’d be exempt from the abstinence of meat on Friday, even on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. You have a lot of flexibility as you are doing it as a special devotion.

Since you did not want to eat meat as a sacrifice, actually eating the meat because your mother made it is a sacrifice in and of itself. Does that make sense

Honor thy mother and thy father and all that

An extra rosary is an appropriate replacement penance. That’s what I would recommend.

Isn’t it age 14 for abstinence, and 18 for fasting? If I recall correctly.

Sure. It changed the fact that your mom is a good cook. Thank her!

Nope there is no difference. Afterall, Jesus was hungry in the desert and wanted bread. We can’t deny our humanity which is to be hungry and to be glad we ate food
