im aware of the “rule” (for lack of a better word) of not eating an hour before receiving the Eucharist, but i have another question. The ten commandments says that we must keep Holy the Sabbath Day. is that commandment fulfilled even if you dont actually recieve communion. Hence, if you dont receive the Eucharist, but go to Mass for the full length, and participate are u breaking the commandment?

No you are not breaking the commandment. Keeping the Sabbath Holy is about observance. If you can recall for various reasons of uncleaness in the Old testament the Jews were not able to keep certain requirements within faith until they were made clean again; like keeping the passover. It is the same with Communion. You can’t receive communion unworthily until you go to confession; so missing Communion is not breaking a commandment for whatever reason.

Besides, you are only required to receive Communion once a year, especially during the Easter season. It is only the Church’s encouragement that suggests one to receive Communion every week or even every day.

One is **not **required to receive Holy Communion in order to fulfill the obligation to attend Mass on the Lords Day (Sunday) or Holy Days of obligation.

the obligation of the third commandment has been changed by Christ to keep holy the Lord’s Day, Sunday, and in the manner he commanded, namely participation at Mass, the sacrifice he instituted at the Last supper and completed at Calvary.

There is no obligation to receive communion at every Mass, however, and in fact it would be wrong to receive, as St. Paul tells us, unworthily, because we have not fasted, are conscious of mortal sin, or some other good reason. We are obligated to receive communion once a year during the Easter season, and to confess our mortal sins once a year.

No.

The Eucharist is our Passover, and the Jews participated in Passover once a year, not every Sabbath. The Sabbath was about honoring the Lord’s day of Rest on the seventh day in the old testament (hence, the move in Christianity to the “eighth day of creation”: Sunday). Keeping the Sabbath Holy never had direct connection with participating in the Passover sacrifice…

The obligation is to attend Mass, not receive Communion. You don’t have to fast if you are not receiving Communion.

You are obligated to receive Communion only once a year during Easter season. Its best to receive Communion as often as you can, but in answering your question about fulfilling Sunday obligation, you do not need to receive Communion to fulfill your Sunday Obligation.
