Eating Before PRAYER

HELLO FOLKS!!!

            I have a question since I was a child I sometimes forget to pray before eating my

meal now my question is,is this a sin, if this is a sin what kind of sin?

                                  Any clarification or some sort would be helpful to me  thx!  :)

Not a sin.

My goal is for every breath I take to be a prayer, so with that attitude and having offered my will up to the HS, I’m always praying and always thankful before, during, and after eating.

Saying a vocal prayer is optional. Many think it’s terrible not to do it, and they are welcome to make the choice that it is, for them. I normally think a quick thanks in my mind before meals if I’m by myself, and pray aloud if with others.

BTW, if you notice the “standard” mealtime prayer says nothing about food. You can use it any time. One of my kids used to always put it in his nighttime prayers.

Really. Try it. It works for ANY occasion: “Bless us O Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive from Thy bounty!”

Certainly not a sin. While a great practice, it is not a requirement and certainly not in the category of sinful to forget.

Alan said it well in that everything we do should be a prayer unto God.

Honestly forgetting anything is never a sin, bad intent is required. Pause chewing a moment when you remember and offer a mental prayer. Then you’ve corrected your mistake. That’s what I do.

On such occasions you can always make it up with the less practiced Thanksgiving After Meals. Often something along the lines of:
We give Thee thanks, Almighty God, for these and all thy benefits which we have received.
And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

I wonder how the souls of the faithful departed got tied up with a prayer after meals?

Perhaps it has something to do with the less than sanitary cooking conditions of our forefathers?:

I wondered the same thing. My kids had to say that after lunch every day and I could think of some amusing explanations.

Thought this might be interesting to some here. The Boy Scout camp my son attends annually has grace before each meal. As the Boy Scouts require revernce & belief in God; but are not affiliated with one religion, I find these graces excellent to use in this situation. It’s quite a sight to see & to hear the singing (yes they are sung) before each meal.

Morning Grace

Gracious Giver of all good,
Thee we thank for rest and food.
Grant that all we do or say,
In Thy service be this day.
Amen

Afternoon Grace

Father for this noonday meal,
We would speak the praise we feel.
Health and strength we have from Thee,
Help us Lord to faithful be.
Amen

Evening Grace

Tireless Guardian on our way,
Thou has kept us well this day.
While we thank Thee, we request,

I’d love to find the music/tunes for them? Are they sung to different tunes, or is each one sang to the same tune but with different lyrics?

Hmmm … is there a song setting for the regular Grace Before Meals?

“They” (never really sure who “they” are) say all 3 are sung to the tune of “For the Beauty of the Earth”, but when 11-18 yr old boys are involved, the tune is quite undistinguishable.

The tune is the same for all 3. The last 2 lines before the “Amen” are repeated and then Amen is sung. So it goes line 1, line 2, line 3, line 4, line 3, line 4, Amen.

I don’t care too much about the tune & their singing skills. It is quite moving to have patrols of 6 or 7, eleven to eighteen year old boys singing it before meals. We usually have 4 patrols at summer camp, and each patrol sings it separately right after they have finished cooking, and before they begin to eat.
