LOL, I would be but unless you like taking out your mom’s friends it might be awkward!I don’t like it when people call me sweetie without taking me on a few dates first. Free for dinner tonight?
It’s just my opinion. Obedience aside, Church dogma aside, I just can’t imagine that eating meat on a Friday-regardless of church rules, is on par with murder and child molestation for one way tickets to hell.
Mortal sins aren’t in competition with each other. Disobedience to God --and since the Church is united with God, disobedience to the Church even in ‘little’ areas which the Church, through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, has deemed are ‘grave’ (even if it doesn’t ‘feel’ like it to us) --is the sin… Murder is a disobedience, child molestation is a disobedience. . .and whether it is one murder or 100, one molestation or 100, one ‘missing Mass’ or 100, one willful ‘eating meat when it is forbidden’ or 100, all are ‘equally’ evil.
Unfortunately today’s society has grown fixated on the idea that unless something is ‘secularly’ determined as evil (witness the large number who have no problems accepting abortion, remarriage after divorce, fornication and adultery as ‘no big deal’) and, beyond that, ‘super’ evil or ‘huge’, then **it isn’t a big deal and God shouldn’t punish ‘eternally’. And that isn’t true. **
It’s a ‘man-made’ doctrine that is really (ultimately) focused on making people ultimately think that they can DO no evil. Because unless they are committing evil on the scale of Hitler or Stalin, or unless they are ‘pedophile priests’ or Mel Gibson, they simply aren’t 'bad’ enough. No matter WHAT they do. It just is no big deal in 'moral relativity world.'
**NOT that I am saying you personally think this way, though. I think a lot of people though don’t realize that (if they thought things through) that this moral relativity is what they really ARE espousing. I think a lot of people truly think that they’re being ‘discerning’, that they’re being more ‘open’, more ‘loving’, indeed they really think they’re being more ‘Christ like’ by redefining God’s teachings into a kind of "You’re all right as long as you do things with ‘love’, follow your heart, ignore what you don’t like and relax because as long as you’re not really bad like Hitler, God will accept ANYTHING you do as ‘right’ for YOU.’ **
**They aren’t. . .but it is AWFULLY hard trying to explain that this IS wrong. Because you (this time I mean ME) come across as some kind of mean old hard-nosed petty-minded CRANK who is trying to just make people unhappy. **
**I’m not trying to do that at all. In fact, I’m trying to make people ETERNALLY happy rather than let them keep on a course which could be a disaster for them. **
Heck, I’m a mom. I am USED to being the ‘meanie’ who makes my children SO unhappy because I insist on petty RULES like eating nutritious foods, getting enough rest, getting plenty of exercise, saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, and pretty much telling them that it is NOT enough for them to sit around stuffing themselves with junk, ignoring their family, being rude, lazy, and making themselves sick because that is what they WOULD do if left to themselves when they’re young.
**But when they’d grown older and were on their own, it was AMAZING how Mom’s tiresome, mean-spirited old ‘rules’ turned out to have been GREAT for their health and their personalities. While their friends whom they envied because “they can do what they want” are suffering from those poor choices in mind and in body. It’s amazing how those bothersome rules turn out to be now what they themselves CHOOSE (having grown used to and enjoying feeling HEALTHY and GOOD) and what they are choosing for their own children. . .even when now THEY hear, “Aw, do I hafta, why can’t I do what I want?” **
**It may seem like we are so ‘free’ when we disobey. WE are the choosers! WE do what we want. But we aren’t free. Each time we disobey we hurt our minds and souls, just as if we eat junk we hurt our bodies, growing malnourished, fat and lazy. Whereas each time we obey, even if it is hard (like diet or exercise) we ultimately get happier; we move more freely, we can DO more because we are healthy and fit. **
