Eating no meat on Fridays

If the Didache is a very early Christian writing, when were the Wednesdays for fasting dropped from the Church’s teaching?

Have Wednesdays for fasting been dropped from Church custom?
Or is the practice less widespread than maybe it once was?
At least devotees of Medjugorje (and some enclosed Orders I know of) practice it though
I doubt the practice was ever declared an article of Faith.
 
I grew up in the pre-Vatican II church. We never fasted on Wednesdays.
 
As Catholics, we believe Christ gave the apostles the power of binding and loosing on earth, so the Church is within it’s rights to impose certain disciplines on it’s members. There is nothing explicit in scripture about fasting on friday, although there are certainly references to fasting in a general sense. Since we are not sola scriptura believing protestants, there isn’t really a disconnect between what’s in the bible and Church tradition.🙂 Homo proponit sed Deus disponit.
 
Well, I enjoy fish on Friday for the remembrance part of the fact Jesus was part of a fishing culture… so I am willing to add a penance. I think it should be a combination of memorial and penance, anyway, so doing something in addition to eating fish makes sense.

Nor sure what it should be, though.

When the Lord Jesus Christ gave the authority to “loose or bind” on earth, it seems to me that He had the coming earthly kingdom in mind. The 12 apostles will sit on 12 thrones [on earth] judging the 12 tribes of Israel. Mt 19:28. In anticipation of this, the eleven [Judas is gone] make it their first order of business to bring their number back up to 12. Acts 1:15-26. Makes sense to me.
 
You are making me homesick…I sure could go for some jambalaya or pastalaya with shrimp…or some oysters…or some fried shrimp or fried catfish, etc…dang, I am hungry…I need to go to lunch.

That is correct. A substitute penance is required. As a diabetic, I cannot fast on fast days (e.g. Good Friday) so I do other things.

Down here in Louisiana fasting from meat on Fridays has never been a real hardship. We have always been told from the pulpit that we should spend extra time in prayer or turn off the TV for the day, etc.

Wrong…the earthly Church or Kingdom as you would call it passed away with the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.D…The Catholic Church is Christ’s Heavenly Kingdom even though it is here on earth…Matthew 3:1-3 1 And in those days cometh John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea. 2 And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. 3 For this is he that was spoken of by Isaias the prophet, saying: A voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.

This is talking about yes, the end of time when this world passes away…but also The Church that would be instituted by Christ and would become the One True Church…and all remnant of the earthly Church finally passed away with the destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70 A.D…which Christ references when he talks about the sign of the times and the end of the age…which a duality is also meant in His words

Mt 19:27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed you; what shall we have therefore?
Mt 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit on the throne of his glory, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Mt 18:18 Verily I say unto you, whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Joh 20:21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father has sent me, even so send I you.

Joh 20:23 Whosoever’s sins you remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosoever’s sins you retain, they are retained.​

This is REAL authority! The twelve are to sit upon twelve thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel when our LORD Jesus Christ returns to earth to establish the long foretold Messianic [millennial] kingdom. They will have the authority to remit or to retain the sins of the people.
During His last 40 days on earth, the LORD Jesus Christ taught the eleven about this literal kingdom. The one thing He did not address was the time element. So, as we come into the book of Acts the eleven, having had their understanding of the Scriptures opened unto them [Luke 24:45], ask the logical question: “…Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” [Acts 1:6] Our LORD did not rebuke the eleven, but simply told the eleven that it was not for them to know the time element.
Next, we see the eleven bringing their number back up to twelve. In light of the Scriptures being opened to them, this was a logical time sequence. Interestingly, when James is killed in Acts 12:2 he is not replaced.

Come, come my friend. Charleston has some very good seafood. I know. BTW, I am awaiting the diocesan newspaper with all the Lenten recipes. And, yes, that same doctor which I am sure you are familiar with has already sent his annual letter protesting the Lenten recipes in the diocesan newspaper.
 
There are some convents of which I have read forego their Offices in order to supply the increasing demand for speciality breads during Lent. Cash market or spiritual income or perhaps a bit of both. (Knowing which side their bread is buttered?;))
 
Of course Catholics who wish to abide by the teachings of the Church prior to Vatican II can fast from meat on all Fridays and observe the fast and abstinence and partial abstinence laws as binding. There is no law that forbids a Catholic from doing so.

Certainly so and there are many of us here who do that because it is part and parcel of the culture here.

My friend, don’t confuse that which was promised to Israel with the Body of Christ Church. The “kingdom” promised to Israel will be set up at the Lord’s 2nd advent. The Body of Christ church was never the subject of O.T. prophecy. When our Lord told the 12 that they would sit upon 12 thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel, he was speaking of this coming earthly kingdom.
