When celebrating Mass in English, can the Priest say this prayer as follows: “Behold the Lamb of God; Behold Him who takes away the sins of the world; How blest are those called to his supper”? I realize that this might be a more accurate translation (except the last phrase), but I thought the Priest was required to use the authorized translation, i.e. “This is the Lamb of God…”

They cannot. From Redemptionis Sacramentum:

[59.] The reprobated practice by which Priests, Deacons or the faithful here and there alter or vary at will the texts of the Sacred Liturgy that they are charged to pronounce, must cease. For in doing thus, they render the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy unstable, and not infrequently distort the authentic meaning of the Liturgy.

I like the translation that you mentioned better. Indeed, I think ‘This is the Lamb of God…’ is somewhat lame in comparison, but I hardly think that that is sufficient reason to use a translation that has not been approved by the Church.

“Behold, the Lamb of God” is actually making a comeback in the new translation. It is the actual translation of Ecce Agnus Dei.

We just don’t know when the new translation will be released.

With the TLM so accessible, I just don’t get worked up over these issues like I use to. Should you protest? You might want to keep your powder dry for a bigger target. It is bound to come along.

Actually, the first part of the new translation has already been approved by the Holy See.

But, the bone of contention lies in the propers and prefaces for Solemnities and Feasts. The USCCB dropped the ball and didn’t get these approved, neither in person nor by electronic vote.

Cardinal Arinze noted that even though the translation is ready to go, the publication date hasn’t been set.

The English translation of the 3rd typical edition of the Roman Missal came into use on the First Sunday of Advent 2011, so we’ve been using it for almost a year and a half.

The Ecce Agnus Dei… now reads

*Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world.
Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

to which we respond

***Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. ***

It’s still not appropriate to change the wording of the Mass where such a thing is not allowed by the rubrics.
