These were song lyrics to a famous song from the 60’s. I looked up the lyrics and sure enough the lyrics from the song “Turn, Turn, Turn” by The Birds is almost exactly the same as the beggining of Eccesiates chapter 3.

Yup.👍 And we used to sing it at Mass in the post Vatican II era that I grew up in. 🤷

Is Ecclesiastes the same thing as the book of Sirach? I know Sirach has an alternative name which I always get confused with one of the other books in the bible (the other book is not a deutrocanonical). 'Cause if it is from Sirach then that’s pretty cool for a rock group to use a bit from the “Catholics-only” section of the bible (-:

I never knew Sounds of Silence was from the bible. That explains why we have it in the folder of our youth group. I thought it was just another that someone added for fun (we have things like “Crocodile Rock” by Elton John in there etc).

Sirach is also called “Ecclesiasticus”, which is a different book than Ecclesiastes.

Not that this adds anything to the thread, but just in order to brag about how much younger I am than all you senior citizens 😉 😛 , although I know it’s a Dylan remake, the only version of Subterranean Homesick Blues I’ve ever actually heard is from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I gotta go now, it’s way past my bedtime 😃

I am speaking specifically of folk style hymns, written for Catholic worship, in the years 1966-1974, roughly, influenced heavily by folk (not rock) style which were nothing short of absymal. I am not talking about Christmas carols. anyone who lived through that era knows precisely what I am talking about. a popular Christmas carol is not liturgical music. you could not have participated in Mass at a Catholic campus ministry in those years and missed this deluge.

yes, fortunately against all odds some good liturgical music has come out of that generation, too bad it had to fight its way through the schlock to survive.

oh yes, By the Waters of Babylon was one of the early hits of Peter Paul and Mary, but somewhat of a standard as most folk groups sang it at one time or another. the lyric is from the psalm

I’m not sure which stage of my liturgical music upbringing I prefer, the early 70’s and the Byrds, or the late 70s and the music from the broadaway musical Godspell. :rolleyes:

My how my eyes rolled last year when I heard that my children had to watch Godspell in their Religion class.🤷
