… all I could think was: Send some of those OBGYNs to the United States!

Dear Lord, bless and protect these doctors who follow Your Holy Will and protect the lives of the most helpless of the innocent. We beseech You to fill with the same sentiments the doctors of the whole world, and especially the doctors of our own country. Reawaken in them the healing gifts which You have bestowed upon them and inspire in them a respect for life from the moment of its conception until natural death. Amen.

FESGO is concerned that the people drafting Ecuador’s new constitution (the process began last fall, and will be submitted to the voters late this year) will either decriminalize or legalize abortion.

Prospects of passage of this new constitution are uncertain. Support seems to be slipping.

The Catholic bishops of Ecuador are speaking up on a number of issues, and seem to be making headway on abortion.
In late May, Archbishop Antonio Arregui Yarza of Guayaquil, president of the bishops’ conference, sent a letter to the assembly asking for constitutional provisions rejecting gay rights, defining marriage as between a man and a woman, and asserting the rights of parents to choose their children’s education.

Ecuadorean Church leaders also recently delivered more than 600,000 signatures to the assembly opposing the proposed decriminalisation of abortion.

Fr Nicolas Dousdebes, an official with the bishops’ conference, said the assembly is “responding well” on the abortion issue but so far not on the definition of marriage.
