I’m just curious, has anyone been to an ecumenical service or mass headed by a Catholic presider? Who were the denominations represented? Were there any instances of liturgical abuse?

There is no such thing as an ecumenical Mass.

We’ve held ecumenical services in our parish. Usually those attending are the local Christians (Catholic, Anglican, Baptist, Moravian, United Church of Canada, Pentecostal) and those who consider themselves Christian, even though they don’t have Baptism (Salvation Army).

Since there is no format for ecumenical services it’s difficult to speak of liturgical abuse. Most ecumenical services have consisted of readings from the Bible, hymns, and reflections by some of the various ministers.

So the services are not like our usual Eucharistic celebration?

Catholics can only celebrate the Eucharist with those in communion with the Catholic Church. The Mass is the Latin term for the Eucharistic liturgy. Ecumenical services are services of the Word and do not include the Eucharist. An Ecumenical service can include prayers, hymns, scripture readings, and talks.

No, not in the least.

We have an ecumenical Thanksgiving service that rotates between our parish and the Methodist church in town. It consists of prayers, readings, songs, a reading of the first Thanksgiving proclamation, reflections, a litany, sometimes a special song by the kids, and collection of canned goods for the local food pantry. And refreshments in the hall after.

We also do the same for baccalaureate-- it’s an ecumenical service that rotates. It has prayers, songs, readings, a litany, and two speakers chosen by the senior class. And refreshments in the hall after.

Are you thinking of a ecumenical prayer service, like Pope St. John Paul II held in Assisi, or a special Mass for a specific intention where there were ecumenical and interfaith members present?

For example, every year in my archdiocese, we have an archdiocesan Respect Life Mass, a ‘Requiem for the Unborn,’ where representatives from Lutheran, Evangelical, Orthodox, Buddhist, and Muslim faiths join us Catholics in praying for the lives lost to abortion that day.
