Ecumenical Service

(I asked this at “Ask an apologist” too but because I would love to get an answer this week I thought I’d post it here as well…)

My church (in Switzerland, where generally the catholic Church seems more liberal to me than in the US) sometimes holds an ecumenical service, together with the Protestant community of our town.

This coming Sunday, once again they have planned an ecumenical thanksgiving service. This time it will take place at the protestant church.

Now I am not sure if a service like that counts for the Sunday obligation? Even if it is the service that our usual priest takes part in?

No, this does not fulfill the Sunday obligation. One must attend Mass to fulfill this obligation.

The Church does not forbid occasional ecumenical services, we have one every Thanksgiving with a local church-- but there is NO “communion” type of service only readings, singing, and a collection of canned goods for the needy.

No, because an Ecumenical service is always only a prayer service for Christian unity. You must attend a Catholic Mass to meet your obligation.

I think this applies unless his bishop gives them a special “permission” (or how it’s called). In any case, it is still recommended you attend a mass because mass is much more than any other Christian worship (Catholic or not).

thanks for your replies. That is what I thought… I will probably attend a Saturday evening mass somewhere.🙂
