Pentecostal “bishop” Eddie Long has died from cancer. Prayers for his soul and all those he was affiliated with.

That said, I think this congregation will, as most of these mega-groups, disintegrate within months. The controversial rape settlement in 2011 reduced the size of his congregation, and his death will cause the community to splinter. This is my opinion based on studying the trends for decades.

Any thoughts?

He was one of those prosperity gospel preachers. That message contends that it is always God’s will for you to be financially rich. It’s a very carnal message, so it appeals to carnal people. I don’t necessarily think that I’m happy that he’s dead, but I’m happy that he’ll no longer be able to lead souls astray.

This message is interesting in that “prosperity theology” promotes “health and wealth” – how did he explain his “unhealth” – punishment from God??

I started listening to Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright’s sermons after he was destroyed by the media via soundbyte – I wanted to hear his side. He’s protestant and black-liberation, but an amazing orator. He calls guys like Long, TD Jakes, etc the “modern day minstrel show”. He’s got a great point there.

Fitting that they take shots at each other. In a very real sense (and one that is becoming more easily recognizable in the United States), these two groups perpetuate the same error from opposite directions. Namely, that God has a preference for one sort of person over another; Prosperity charlatans for the rich, and Liberation justice warriors for the poor. God’s love, as we know, is not based on material possessions.
