Why was there a Garden of Eden that Adam and Eve lived in and the rest of the earth barren?
Why did God make such a big planet and have only the Garden of Eden for Adam and Eve to live in?

While I don’t have any documents from the Church to back me up, I think that we can learn some things from this story. It is worth noting that Adam and Eve had their needs met for them when they lived trusting God in Eden, but when they sinned they distanced themselves from God and found themselves with troubles.

Just in Mass this evening, were an interesting reading (Jeremiah 17.5-8) and Psalm (Psalm 1) that seem related to this. We have life thanks to God, and we cannot live trusting in ourselves.

I would say God made the garden for them because he loved them. My parents always tried to give me the best home they could. The garden might have been big, or small, I don’t know, but I’m sure God made it big enough for the guests. I’m not sure why you think the world outside the garden was barren, I don’t think the Bible says that, but until Adam and Eve were kicked out I guess you could say it didn’t have a gardener yet, so it may have been a bit wild and unkept, probably overgrown with briars and thistles 😉

Who said the rest of the earth was barren?
Why did God… have only the Garden of Eden for Adam and Eve to live in?
Two people don’t take up much space.

But I’m not a literalist. I think the Garden would be anywhere the man and woman were in communion with God.

  1. Genesis suggests that there was life (and humans) outside of Eden
  2. The writers of Genesis had no idea how big the planet was

Adam and Eve entered the world as unique human beings, totally different in kind from the rest of creation. Their human nature was an intimate unification of matter and spirit, corporeal and rational, body and soul. Thus they were called to share, by knowledge and love, in God’s own life. Being in the image of God, the individual possesses the dignity of a person who is not just a thing, but who is someone called to friendship with his Creator.

The Garden of Eden emphasizes this very special creation of Adam and Eve. Here Adam and Eve lived in God’s friendship by freely choosing to be in submission to their Creator. Why live anyplace else?

Barren is not the right word but it was no Garden of Eden
So are you suggesting that there was not true Garden?

It was no Garden of Eden.

If 2 people don’t take up much space then when they started having children would it still be big enough for them?
