How old is your son? There are 4 levels, one for First Communicants, one for a little older, maybe 5-8th grades, then another level for older students, then one for the teachers, which has more explantions.
I greatly prefer the St Joseph’s to the New American.
The old Baltimore Catechisms, that I learned from several decades ago, had a work section after each chapter. It had questions for the student on how to apply the teaching of the chapter to sample situations.
I note the more recent republications I have seen don’t have that. I think they were a valuable portion of the teaching and would try to get one with them.
