I guess I see the archbishop’s point:
"Catholic schools in Edmonton are being told to find new ways of raising revenues outside of casinos and other types of gambling. Edmonton Archbishop Richard Smith has ordered all Catholic schools, community groups and other organizations to stop raising money through casinos and other types of gambling starting Oct. 1. Smith said it’s an issue of morality.
Lori Nagy, who speaks for the Edmonton Catholic School Board, said the board was counting on an additional $3 million raised through gambling revenues to pay for important school programs. “This funding is critical for our schools,” she said.
“It pays not only for field trips and for technology, [but] perhaps even more importantly, it pays for breakfast and hot lunch programs in our schools that we know thousands of children would do without if we didn’t have this funding available.”
