- The Church does condemn any school system. Catholics just need to remember their Faith.
- Public schools are controlled by state governments. Private schools are not.
- Our system is based off the French system.
Actually, public schools are meant to be controlled by an elected school board that is chosen by the citizens of the district. In most jurisdictions, the candidates are required to be either homeowners, business owners, or longtime residents of the district they wish to serve. The idea is that they will act in the best interest of the children because the quality of the school is directlyl related to the value of their property and the success of their business.
However, homeowners and business people are generally more interested in looking good than actually being good, so when a situation arises where they have to deal with what is right and what looks good, you can imagine how things go down. There’s also the fact that not every popular citizen, no matter how well-meaning, knows the first thing about the educational process or has the skills to balance a budget. Then there’s the nuts that just get in there to pass a pet project like a new stadium for the football team or the termination of the band teacher that gave their nephew a C minus and don’t give a flip about the rest of it.
The result is a vast inequality of efficiency and integrity among school boards and the schools’ performance demonstrates the difference. Therefore, the citizens begin to mistrust their elected school boards and become very complacent in handing over their rights and the best interest of their children over to “experts” at the state level. Recently, there is a bigger and bigger push for the federal government to take over. (and we all know how that would turn out.)
So, whether or not a person intends for their family to use the public school system, they do have an interest in the success of their district at the local level, because otherwise the state slowly steals more and more control and it all goes to hell in a handbasket.
