When I first returned to the Church after many years of being away I sat in the back. Then I moved up a few rows, then I found myself in my current place in the second row.
Like you, I was worried about making a glaring mistake. Don’t worry. As other posters have said people aren’t watching you during Mass. They are happy you are there. It’s good you have other people to sit with. When I came back to the Church I didn’t know a single Catholic so I just asked whoever I was sitting beside to help me find my way in the missal, etc. Everyone was very friendly.
Sitting up font is great because you can see everything and won’t have as many distractions.
