I am hoping to go to my first EF Mass sometime in the next few weeks but feel very intimidated by it. I was wondering if there is a guide as to everything you are suppose to say and do in the EF so I can prepare ahead of time.

God Bless

You might want to visit local used book stores or estate sales near your home, especially if you live in an area with a lot of Catholics.

Lots of older Catholics, many of them quite old now, received short missals for their 1st communions to help them follow along. My mum has such a small book, and its printed on high quality bible paper designed to last a long time, so if you find one it should still be good to go even if its 100 years old.

Don’t be intimidated! The mass is not a performance. In fact, depending on the parish, you might not be expected to make any responses at all. Just follow the postures of the rest of the laity.

I second the recommendation of the little red missal. It has all the prayers and instructions you’ll need to follow along. It even has helpful comments and notes in the margins ("the communicant does not say “Amen” ;)).

The first time you’ll probably have a bit of an issue following along. Just make the same bodily postures and vocal responses (if any) as the rest of the laity. A few things to keep in mind:
  • Do not say “Amen” when receiving Holy Communion.
  • The Canon of the Mass is prayed silently.
  • If there is music, feel free to sing along with the Gloria and the Credo.
