Aye, I’ve had some lucky escapes so far. You shouldn’t get married unless you’re pretty sure it’s ordained by God (and not yer hormones).

If it’s a true love match, I think your wife would be happy to obey you. And you would rarely have to put your foot down about anything.
I don’t think you fully understand what that quote means.

You have to look at the whole thing in context, you can’t just say “wife submit” with out the counterbalance of “love her like Christ loved the Church”. Submission does not mean she can’t have her own opinion or you don’t have to listen to it. Whats more your commanded to love her like Christ loves the Church. If you truly do that how much bossing around of your wife are you going to do? My husband is the head of our household, and I have free submitted my self to him. That doesn’t mean tells me what to do and demands obedience from me. Quite the opposite. When something comes up we discuss it and come to an agreement, because he loves and respects me. He wants to know what I think and how I feel about the issues going on in our lives. That I feel is the meaning behind that quote.

Excellent summation, in real life terms.👍

Sure, that’s fair. In practice, you talk things out. Like, you might not want to come home with a sports car when the family needs a space cruiser.

I think the EF Nuptial Mass would be a good test, 'though. And a pre-nuptial agreement. If she’d put up with that, you know for sure she’s keen. 😃

I saw in a TV programme, I think it was Brideshead Revisited, about the daughter of Lord Marchmaine(?), who married a bounder, and one indicator that she married beneath herself was that he wouldn’t make a ‘settlement’ (dowry?) on her; I think it meant giving her a wad of cash so she’d be sorted out if the marriage broke down. She was a catch, and upper class, so that’s what was normal.

She didn’t get the settlement. The other indicator was that he haggled over her wedding ring in a jewellers back room. Simply not the done thing!

[Mind you, there’s at least 100% markup on those things. Many women would be surprised at what their heirlooms are really worth, I’d say. I vaguely recall it takes 20 years(?) before they’re worth what you paid for them, if you were to walk into a shop in Hatton Garden and put 'em on the bench.

Gold, I say, gold, that’s better! Oy vey, gevalt! *(Rubs hands)]

Roman Catholic Church …
Latin Rite …

… … …

… I know, let’s have a Mass in English!

.
Your comment cracked me up! Sorry to the OP as I didn’t address your question, but I thought that comment was funny. 😛

I know, and that realisation hit me like a sock in the head when some newbie poster on this form mentioned it in passing. Something like:

“The Ukraininan Catholics have their rite, the Maronite Catholics have their rite, why did the Roman Catholic Church discard the rite which makes it Roman?”.

Gives me a sick feeling in my stomach when I think about it.

I hope you’re joking about the pre-nup. They go entirely against the Catholic conception of marriage. I would guess simply having one could be prima facie evidence to get a decree of nullity. It certainly shows an intention against the permanence of the marriage.

God Bless

I’m actually not a “newbie” on this forum. I simply forgot the log in info for my old username on here and had changed my email address recently. Oh well! To begin anew 😉

Anyway, I really should address the OP’s concerns rather than hijack his thread! So, here are my thoughts: in one post you actually commented that there are “sexist” passages in Sacred Scripture

I recommend you and your future bride, if possible, sit down with a priest and discuss your issues about these particular passages. Weepixie gave some good advice.

Does your future bride not share your love for the EF?

To Bilop: Ah, but are they actually against canon law? I think a pre-nup would help concentrate both parties minds wonderfully. What a horror to go into a marriage only to find out your spouse has expectations you don’t share at all.

I’ve read the two things that cause the most problems in marriage are s*x and money. The first is something that can be worked at, but the second …?

In the past people reared ten kids in a cottage. Now two kids in a mansion is the (desired) norm. With a couple of nice cars in the driveway.

Spell it out in advance, I say, and get some arguments over with. A marriage is a contract, and they work best in real life if both parties agree to and understand all the terms and obligations.
