New Liturgical Movement: EF Pontifical Mass with Bishop Schneider in Charlotte NC, October 26th

Next Thursday, October 26th, the church of St Ann in Charlotte, North Carolina, and the Charlotte Latin Mass community, will welcome Bishop Athanasius Schneider for the celebration of a Solemn Pontifical Mass in honor of Blessed Karl of Austria. The Mass will begin at 7pm; the church is located at 3635 Park Road.

What’s a Pontifical Mass? Obviously something to do with the Pope, but otherwise. . . .?

No, a pontifical Mass is a Mass celebrated by a bishop. In this case, His Lordship will celebrate a solemn pontifical mass in the Extraordinary Form… it is the pinnacle of the traditional Roman Rite… lots of extra prayers and ceremonials to reflect the Bishop’s special role as a vicar of Christ.

Also, in terms of the terminology, you’re thinking of the Pope as Supreme Pontiff (also called the Roman Pontiff), but every bishop is a pontiff.

Interesting. I never knew that. I guess that’s why they (we) use the word Supreme when referring to the Roman Pontiff.
