Effects of anti-Catholic stuff

It torques me off most of the time because they try to couch it as a question, when really all it is is a set up so they can badmouth the Catholic faith and I HATE that. In the end it’s usually nothing more than a bait so that they tell you how rotten Catholicism is and try to get you to pray that sinner’s prayer thing.

Ultimately it boosts my faith because I have had to dig deeply into the truths we believe in order to answer that stuff and that just makes me all the more sure that I’m right where Jesus Christ is. I wouldn’t trade it for the world and I love to reassure other Catholics along the way.

I have a buddy who left for many many years and then “reverted” and says that if he knew then what he knows now, he’d never have left the faith to begin with. That’s sad because I really think that that is why those folks who do leave the faith do so. they really don’t know what they believe or what the church teaches, which I guess means that we all need to get more into the faith formation side of our parishes.

Forget “Keepin’ the faith”…give it away!

when i first encountered anti-Catholicism, it hit pretty hard. all the horrible things accussed against The Church, and the way the accussations were presented–it hurt real bad. but it has made me to go out and search for the teachings of The Faith more than i ever had. now i thank the Lord for giving me the opportunity to take up my cross, and follow Him to Paradise (CA Forums??!:D:D )

I feel exactly the same way. I had never heard much against Catholics other than “they don’t know how to use birth control” and I’m in my mid 40’s. I laughed it off and ignored it. Then a few years ago I started working with a gentleman that is Lutheran and he really has said negative things against the church and doesn’t care that it hurts other people. He believes the Pope is the anti-christ (while JPII was alive) and has belittled Medjigore to name a few things. It also has made me want to learn more. I don’t want to fight with him but want to be able to back up what I say.

Nothing anyone says about my Faith or my Church will change my opinion, ever…

Hey everyone, it’s my first post. Just wanted to chime in on this from a Protestant perspective. My fiancee is Catholic and I have never really known any Catholics before, so I had/have a lot of questions. I read a reply on here that some people “bait” you into bashing your religion. Man I hate that! I have/had legitimate questions about your beliefs, since our children will be raised Catholic. Finally my fiancee advised me to consult a priest. Which I did. I’m really starting to feel drawn to the Catholic church the more I find out about it. I’m just sorry for all of you who have had to defend what you believe to the ignorant. As I said, my questions were out of a genuine curiosity and desire to know. I’m really glad I found this site; and I’m going to continue to meet with the priest…I’ll keep you all posted.

The anti-Catholic stuff just makes me stronger. People don’t usually resort to that level of vitriol unless they’re envious. It usually either amuses me or makes me feel sorry for them in their delusion. People also generally don’t like knowing that they’re wrong, and the truth irritates them. I know I found a lot more stuff wrong with the Church when I was keeping myself out of full Communion by my lifestyle.

Over the past week it has also been a good indicator of a person’s “quality”, so to speak (LOTR reference). The small-minded, selfish, and petty have shown themselves in bashing the Pope and the Church while we are mourning our beloved pastor and Papa, and they stick out like sore thumbs against the huge backdrop of love and support from most of the world.

Hugh,

Believe me, there’s a BIG difference between well-intentioned and genuine questions, and those chosen to simply lead into a Catholic-bashing session. Most of us here can easily tell the difference. We don’t mind the former at all, and usually attempt to ignore or quickly dispatch the latter.

That said, you and your genuine questions are very, very welcome here. I hope we can help you out, so don’t hesitate to keep asking. God bless you and good luck with the wedding!

I agree with you. Encountering anti-Catholicism stuff strengthens my resolve to study more and more about my faith.
Not only do I want to read more - I also will answer people with stuff from the CA website. There is something on the JPII site about A. Greely - I went to his site and posted there becuase of his lack of faith in our Church.

God Bless,
Donna

Hello again,

Thanks to all for your kind responses. ChurchMilitant, I got the email and will check out the resources you listed. Just so you guys have an idea where I am in all of this let me see if I can sum it up:
  1. REALLY REALLY like the Catholic approach to marriage.
  2. Really bothers me to no end that the Bible I read has been edited.
  3. Still trying to get a handle on the whole Mary thing, as well as the saints. I kind of understand, just need to do some more research. (Will be meeting with the priest again in a couple of weeks.)
  4. Love it that the Catholic church does not pander or cater to anyone. In this day of political correctness and seemingly endless gray area, I find it refreshing to see the Catholic church stating clearly what they believe and why.
  5. Need to find out more about mortal sins, the rosary, etc.
That’s just a brief summary of where I am in all this. I’ve really been praying that God will direct me in this. I don’t want to convert to Catholic to please anyone but Him. I really need to make sure that my motivation is true; because I believe that a persons faith is not something to be thrown about, changed, altered, etc on a whim. That way if someone asks me why I am or am not Catholic, I can answer them with more than “I dunno”.

Thanks everyone

Fellow Catholics,

Please don’t let AntiCatholicism bother you! Many Prots can prove that sinners exist in the Church and we already know that because Christ forwarned us about such (wheat and chaff). If the Prot says the Pope did this, the Pope did that, say OK you have proven to me that sinners exist in the Church, NOW PROVE TO ME THE DOCTRINES AND FAITH OF THE CC ARE WRONG! The Cant do that!

Christ said the apostles will be sifted like wheat but prayed that the faith of Peter may never fail. I am sure Peter committed personal sin after this, BUT his faith never failed! Same thing with Popes

For yourself check all the allegations that were made. Very very often they have put a anticatholic spin on the Truth!

For the most part, it doesnt have any effect on me. Aside from maybe being angered or even laughing at the junk… the mood it puts me in passes in about 5 minutes. They can go on their merry way, I checked the back of the book and read the end of the story, we win. 😉

All all critiques “anti-Catholic”? I’m reading Papal Sins by Garry Wills right now and I admit it’s bothering me…especially the parts on how Pius IX came up with the infallibility doctrine. Wills is supposed to be Catholic but he’s highly critical of JPII and Humanae Vitae (of course!) and all the other non-negotiables.
