I believe that there are some cases where it does more harm to stay in the marriage than divorce. This is true for abusive environments. And in such cases, there are just reasons to separate, or so says somewhere in the canon law of the Catholic Church.

This is very true. The Church does NOT require couples to stay together if doing so is unsafe or inadvisable (e.g. abuse or adultery). If one spouse leaves the other the remaining spouse is permitted to seek divorce as a measure of protection. My husband and his first wife were divorced because of her adultery and abandonment. (The marriage was found to be invalid and we are sacramentally married.)
 
For readers that are in an abusive environment, that study shouldn’t scare you from separation. There are many studies about the effects on children in abusive marriages.
