Jennifer–no one is being denied Communion. If you believe otherswise, there’s nothing we can do to help you. Please pray about this.

I would just like to say, the church doesn’t change the wine and replace it with grape juice for those who are alcholics. Those who are just don’t receive the blood of christ. Your son could receive one form and not the other. He would still be in full communion with the church.

palmas85 said " Without it I think life would be pretty bleak." You are very correct, I have for all basically left the church, when I was struggling, but still receiving the troubles where difficult, but now without the body of christ, yes, life is pretty bleak.

Alcoholism is not an autoimmune disease. The only real reason the Church sticks to it’s guns about gluten remaining in the Host is the attempt to “avoid scandal”. That comes from some Bishop or Cardinal or whatever. It’s the official response to “how to deal with Celiacs and alcoholics.” Celiac Disease is only “scandalous” in the Catholic Church because they’re afraid that saying some people need a rice Host would make people question transubstantiation. They’re making rules that are generated out of fear, not faith. God can exist in a rice Host just as easily as in a regular Host or a Low-gluten Host. Jesus prefers Mercy over sacrifice. If you understand that, you’ll understand my point.
I will continue to be a Catholic, be obedient, raise my children to be the same. But, I have no faith in men and the rules they make up and continue to implement based on TRADITION. When it comes to light that something is wrong and needs to be fixed- You fix it. You don’t cling to tradition as evidence of your faith.

Yes they are- for the sake of tradition, they are. Instead of telling me to pray about this, why don’t you pray for understanding yourself. It could be that you’re missing a point.

Jennifer… I should just note that the Jesus you receive under the species of wine is just the same whole Jesus you receive as bread. Don’t think that by not being able to eat bread that communion is being taken away.

I’m sorry you’re so frustrated–it’s not my intention to pick on you or make you feel bad. Please, as we have said, Christ is fully present in both species, not just one or the other. No one is being denied Communion. Maybe you could talk to your priest about the concerns you have regarding your son and his First Communion? I would hope he could fully explain things to you and allay your concerns.

I understand the wine is equal to the Communion Host. I do understand that. However, there is no reason not to accomodate Celiacs with a rice host. God can exist in a rice host as well as in a gluten containing host. The Catholic Church declares Communion with a rice host invalid. That is nonsense. The leadership of the Catholic Church lacks compassion, empathy and common sense in regard to this Commandment. The spirit of the Commandment is lost to them when they focus all their attention on a traditional recipe. Jesus would not want the attention to be on the ingredients of the bread. Occasionally the Catholic Church makes bad calls. This is one of those times. I don’t know about others, but when I read the Bible, I get a sense of Jesus as having great common sense. This rule about the host containing gluten in order to be valid lacks common sense. It’s simply rigid adherence to tradition which benefits noone except those who are afraid of change. Whenever fear is involved, there is a problem. God wants the Celiacs to participate in Communion fully. A rice host would complete the meal. I appreciate the feedback from everyone. It’s my opinion that the Church will eventually relent by the sheer force of God’s will that everyone be included fully. Common sense and compassion will prevail. Peace.
