I was listening to a talk by a traditional priest (Fr Ripperger, FSSP) and he said that our prayers are not “efficacious” without grace. The article I found linked below, says the same thing. It seems to be the traditional understanding.

I was wondering, what does this mean? Does God still hear the prayers of someone who is in mortal sin, if they are praying for repentance, for example? I’m also not sure what the term “efficacious” means.
Thank you
