I sound like a “rebuke” to me on the part of the Bishop.
I have tried very hard to get a link to the El Paso Times article of August 2, 2010, by Fr. Michael Rodriquez, but it is nowhere to be found. If anyone can find and post it, that would be most appreciated. There are copies of the article at several sites. It is bad enough if the newspaper just erased this article from their online edition, but I am still left to wonder if the article appeared in the paper edition.
Priests and bishops need to speak out clearly on exactly what Roman Catholic teaching is on homosexual acts, homosexual practice. Some actions are intrinsically evil, and maybe no one can say for sure when a homosexual act is a moral sin, engaging in homosexual acts can be clearly be said to place oneself in the near occassion of mortal sin and is gambling with one’s soul and etermal destiny.
Fr. Rodriquez did speak with clarity and he did speak with charity and compassion, but people need to know exactly what the Roman Catholic teaching on homosexual practice is, and this Bishop just exemplifies what is so so wrong with so many of the Bishops in the USA today.
The fact that there is a debate on this forum, that is, among Roman Catholics, is pretty indicative of the disease of the Church today in the USA.
The Bishop expressed the Protestant and secular stance on homosexual practice in my opinion.

This case also prompted a rebuke from the local bishop … Armando Ochoa who upbraided
the priest … indirectly … saying his Fr. Rodriguez’s “opinion” didn’t reflect the necessary
elements of being compassionate … tolerant … inclusive … pastoral … dignity … respect.
In short … every buzzword used by the liberal crowd to gloss over the very real charitable
need to say … continuing in mortal sin leads to misery in this life and damnation in the
next … which is what Fr. Rodriguez was saying.
And please … skip the predictable line about … well … we can’t say if they are in a state of
mortal sin. No we can’t … but we can and should say … stop doing what you’re doing
because it is evil and there’s a very good chance you may very well be in a state of mortal
sin.
Why gamble like that with your eternal destiny?
So what we see here in these two cases which both happened in the past week … is the
very real dichotomy that exists in the Church today … renegade liberal priests shooting off
1
their mouth in public. And bishops using the “charity” argument as a skirt to hide behind
when it comes to clearly and unambiguously proclaiming the teachings of the Church.
It’s interesting if you read the El Paso bishop’s statement carefully. While Fr.
Rodriguez’s article which prompted the subtle smack down from the bishop was talking
about the larger issue of homosexuality in general AND why it’s wrong to try and push
so-called same-sex marriage … the bishop ONLY really addressed the issue of same sex
marriage head on.
The rest of his article was about dignity and respect and tolerance and compassion et
cetera.
Not that those qualities aren’t needed. Of course they are. But Fr. Rodriguez had already
said that. His words now …
“I urge all of the Catholic faithful to treat homosexuals with love, understanding, and
respect … At the same time, never forget that genuine love demands that we seek, above
all, the salvation of souls. Homosexual acts lead to the damnation of souls.”
One wonder exactly what in that message needed clarification … was just an “opinion”
and did not “necessarily” reflect Church teaching."
