Now the authorities of Ebenezer Lutheran can hardly be unaware that the Catholic Church regards female ordinations as spurious and spurious ordinations as painfully divisive and harmful. For Ebenezer to host such an event is, quite simply, an act of anti-Catholic sabotage – the very kind of sectarian hostility that ecumenists are supposed to have renounced. Of course all parties understand and accept that ELCA disagrees with the Catholic doctrine on Holy Orders, and no one is denying ELCA’s liberty to advance its beliefs in private or public. But it’s a different matter to offer one’s church as a staging ground for a mutiny in a navy not one’s own.

Three quick thoughts

1. No Protestant church should have hosted an ordination service of a 'Catholic' woman priest. It is offensive and contrary to the spirit of ecumenism. I am surprised and disappointed that an ELCA church would behave so ill-advisedly. 

 2. I hope the day comes when women are ordained -  at least as Deacons - in the Catholic Church. There seems to be some evidence that this happened in the early church. Moreover, and more important, we live in different times with different perspectives than previous centuries. Tradition has its place, but positive change often becomes more important. 

 3. I hope, too, that the Catholic Church will stop claiming to be the one and only 'true church', be dismissive of Protestant churches as 'ecclesial societies' with ministers who do not officiate at valid communion services (as Benedict XVI said awhile back), and in other ways offend Protestants. I worry that the RC Church has moved a bit backward since John XXIII, Paul VI and Vatican II. At the same time, those Protestants who spread anti-Catholic venom should stop. This silly squabbling among Christian is contrary to our common faith in our one Lord.

  God bless Catholics, Protestants and people of every creed, color and country. May religion become a bridge and not a barriier.

There is no evidence that women were ever ordained in the Church.

Neither the Church nor Benedict XVI has said any such thing. What has been truthfully said is that Protestant communion services do not enjoy the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut. If we could, please keep this thread on track about this ELCA congregation’s action. I am a former ELCA Lutheran who retains gratitude for my time there and I am trying to extend some good faith that this one congregation is being a loose cannon, and that the ELCA as a whole is not tacitly or explicitly approving a policy of sponsoring revolts in other people’s churches. So I encourage Lutherans as well as Catholics who take ecumenicism seriously to contact the leadership and suggest that this is not the road they want to go down.

“we watch that station (best weatherman) and when i saw/heard the promo, i decided to flip channels rather than flipping out. from the snip i saw, one of the women laboring under the delusion they are now priests was asked what position the church would take. her response, that if her identity was known she COULD be refused the Sacraments as well as excommunicated, was fascinating. is this another example of “poor formation” or just the fruits of 40 years of inaccurate and poor Catechetics?”
