My sister was the victim of a very cunning and determined identity theft, and found herself responsible for the repayments on a very large bank loan (which she hadn’t applied for or received, of course). It took her about a year to sort it all out and she’s still out of pocket.
It’s a terrible thing to do to someone, especially an elderly lady.
