Electric Advent Candles

I’m currently a college freshman and would like to celebrate Advent when it gets here, but my university doesn’t allow candles in the dorms. So I can’t buy Advent candles. I was wondering if there are electric Advent candles that use a lightbulb as the “flame”.

Has anyone seen this or know where I could possibly get one.

I don’t know about electric candles, but at Christianbook.com they sell fridge magnet advent candles with advent activities. Not the same, I know, but at least a magnet can’t catch fire. 🙂
 
Electric Advent Candles sounds like a rock band. 😛

In all seriousness, you can buy little LED votive tea light candles fairly cheaply at Wal-Mart or a craft store, and then get purple and rose colored candle cups (like you’d put a normal candle in) and put them in that. You could even find some way of affixing said cups to a wreath.

Actually I’ve seen these poor representation for colored electric Advent Candles sets sold in Catholic religious supply stores and even used in some Parishes similar to the odd electric red Sanctuary lamps.

Surprisingly unknown to the average parishioner most Catholic parishes in a diocese have stiff building Insurance regulations where Votive paraffin candles themselves can be burned in proper receptacles. The same goes for Advent candles in proper five candle circular ring type holders designed specifically for Advent candles.

Five ring Advent candle sets of course have three violet/purple candles, one pink for Gaudete Sunday, Third Sunday of Advent and a larger white Christ Nativity candle for Christmas.

You can find electric Advent candle sets in almost any Christian religious store.
Paraffin Advent candle sets would be cheaper. 🤷
 
They make battery operated taper candles - my son’s play just used a whole bunch of those for their last production. I would just go with something like that.

That’s what I was thinking!

If they don’t make them, someone should! I teach in a Catholic school, and really, we’re not supposed to have fire in the classroom; although I make an exception.

WE use the battery operated votive candles.
 
Here is a page with electric/battery operated taper, votive and tealight candles in the advent colors. Scroll down the page a bit - they would work well for areas that don’t allow an open flame! 🙂

I did something like this with real candles cause I don’t like the florally smell that most pink and purple candles come in. Buy the clear votive holders in whatever size and shape you like and the cover them in elmers glue and tissue paper. Then I use the cheap tea lights and you can use the battery powered tea lights and they glow purple and pink quite nicely. 👍
 
I made one of these for the same reason - no candles allowed. I bought one of those five-candle electric candles from Wal Mart which has a C7 socket (night light bulb) on each “candle.” I bought three purple bulbs and a pink one, plus a clear one for Christmas Day, then screwed them gently into the sockets so that they did not make contact. Each week, I would twist another bulb in until all were lit at Christmas. You can also buy four single electric candles and arrange them in a circle inside a wreath for your table.

If you are electronically-inclined, you can find purple- and pink-colored LED’s on Ebay or in most electronic stores fairly cheap (I once bought a bag of 100 purple LED’s for $6.00 from a Chinese vendor on Ebay). You can connect them to a 3 volt source (2 AA batteries) and use them as little candles or put them in glass candle holders. You can also use “warm white” LED’s which are very close to the color of actual candlelight.

yes they are on sale all over, craft stores, home decor stores, even walgreens, in several colors, or you can use white or ivory with colored ribbons. I gave them as gifts for all the catechists last year (this year they got a small standing crucifix) to use in the classrooms because the school’s insurance and the fire dept. forbid regular candles.
 
I found a ready-made set of purple and pink votive-sized LED candles at a local Catholic book and gift shop, so if there’s one near you, that might be a good place to check out. If not, you can probably find white LED candles at Wal-Mart or Target or a dollar store and paint them purple and pink.
 
If you prefer, you can also buy “flicker flame” bulbs at Walmart’s Christmas aisle which have a black, flame-shaped cathode inside a neon-filled bulb. They light up orange-red (the only color neon will ionize in), but they flicker like a candle and can be put into purple-painted electric candles.
 
Hmmph–those ones on the Catholic company website look nice, but I’d consider getting rechargeable batteries, unless you’re just planning to light them for a short time nightly.
