Elements in Discernment
  1. **Prayer-**life of prayer and not just in crisis time…Then he went out to the mountain to pray, spending the night in communion with God. At daybreak he called his disciples and selected…(Lk.6:12-13)
  2. **Evidence-**gather facts—Agilities, limiations (spiritual, mental, physical…)
  3. **Guide-**a mature concerned Christian to help be objective (Spiritual director).
  4. **Openness-**look at motivation- Rich young man (Mt.19:16-23) What are my idols, false gods? Why do I want to do it? Why not? Effort is to be free to do His work.
  5. **Time-**be patient with yourself, with the Lord. You need the passage of time to see if movement within are from God, or self, or…
  6. **Peace-**sense of rightness, calm. Present your needs to God in every form of prayer and in petition full of gratitude. Then God’s own peace,which is beyond all understanding will guard over your hearts and minds. (Phil.4:6-7). Inner peace, even if intellectually or otherwise you find what you are being called to is difficult or unattractive.
  7. **Decision-**make most loving-choice. Choose what sense is God’s will as you understand it.
  8. **Confirmation-**after making decision give some more time to prayer and wait to see if peace remains. Should be a continuation of interior tranquility, satisfaction that I made the best decision.
Over all ideas on Discerment
  1. Most loving choice-can’t expect infallibility. Won’t be absolutely, mathematically certain in every discernment.
  2. Work at it- gathering evidence is hard but try to get all the pertinent facts available.
  3. Not necessarily the most difficult choice. Trying to find God’s will. (Lk.10:38-42)
  4. Scripture on choice, call can be helpful to pray over:
    Abraham (Gen.12:14); Moses (Ex.3:10-12,4:1,10-12); Amos (Am.7:14-15); Isaiah (Is.6:8); Jeremiah (Jer.1:4-8); Ezechiel (Ez 3:1-4); The 12 Apostles (Mk.3:12-15); Requirements (Lk.9:57-62);The Cross (Mt.16:24-28);Temptations (Lk.4:1-13); Seek Kingdom (Lk.12:22-31); What matters (Phil.1:9-10); All things work together…love of God (Rom.8:26-31)

I really enjoyed reading this and recognize these as elements of my own self-doubting search for menaning.
I struggle with # 5 (Time). As I approach my 50th birthday I find myself impatient to learn what it is He wants. I have yet to find that sense of peace or maybe it is more correct to say that I don’t recognize the times I am at peace. I define peace as the absence of stress, fear, anxiety, etc. This might be whay I can never find peace (my definition) because I might be looking for something that doesn’t exist in the form I expect. Thanks for the post and I’ll redouble my efforts in the prayer department.
