What elements of the pontificalia in a Pontifical High Mass in the EF can be licitly used in the OF?

Exempli gratia: episcopal gloves; four chaplains in copes with the mitre, crozier, bugia, and book; the two mitres, precious and golden; the gremiale, pontifical dalmatic and tunicle; two assistant deacons in dalmatics; assistant priest in cope; bishop processing into the church before Mass in biretta and cappa magna, then kneeling in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, then vesting in the secretarium during the chanting of Terce; et cetera. Any others?

Dear mods, this might belong in Traditional Catholicism. If you think so, feel free to move it.

Well… let me see. I don’t have a copy of Caeremoniale Episcoporum handy, but here it goes.

episcopal gloves
Yep, says Fr. Z.

four chaplains in copes with the mitre
Not sure. Probably not. But by “with the mitre” you mean holding it when he’s not wearing it, you can have two vimpae that hold the mitre and crosier when not in use. They are frequently used at papal Masses.

crozier
certainly!

bugia and book
Book, Yes. Bugia, Yes, according to Fr. Ray Blake.

the two mitres, precious and golden
No, according to Caeremoniale Episcoporum. Only one mitre per Mass.

the gremiale
Not sure, but I would guess not.

pontifical dalmatic and tunicle
Dalmatic: Yes. Tunicle: Probably not.

two assistant deacons in dalmatics
I think so. There was a thread on that that I started a while ago.

assistant priest in cope
I’d say probably not. Certainly cassock and surplice, but IDK about the cope.

bishop processing into the church before Mass in biretta and cappa magna, then kneeling in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, then vesting in the secretarium during the chanting of Terce
Well… It is before Mass…🙂

The faldstool is always appropriate, instead of the normal chair that is in the specific church.

Buskins are also appropriate on solemn occasions. I mean he has to wear something on his feet, so mind as well wear the proper vestment

7 processional candles (CE 128)

7 altar candles (these are actually required, if celebrated within the bishop’s diocese)

That’s all I can think of right now.

JGMendes4049;8534605:
episcopal gloves
Yes, they are still permitted just not commonly used.
four chaplains in copes with the mitre, crozier, bugia, and book;
Yes, a bishop should have someone to carry these items although I don’t know if the bugia can be used in an OF Mass
the two mitres, precious and golden;
No, only one mitre for the whole Mass
the gremiale
If I remember correctly what that is: yes, if he will be using sacred chrism or holy oils, e.g. ordinations
pontifical dalmatic and tunicle
Dalmatic yes although it is optional; tunicle, no not any longer
two assistant deacons in dalmatics
Defintely, a bishop celebrating with full pontificals should have two such deacons
assistant priest in cope
I’m not sure, there could certainly be a priest assisting but it would probably be in cassock and surplice I suppose a cope would be OK and even appropriate on a very solemn occasion.
bishop processing into the church before Mass in biretta and cappa magna
, then kneeling in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, then vesting in the secretarium during the chanting of Terce; et cetera
Yes, most of this is expected. The appropriate Office (according to the time of day) should be recited before the Mass. The cappa magna however as some limitations: I think it is limited to diocesan bishops; it can only be used in the bishop’s own diocese; it is also restricted to more solemn occasions - it cannot be used every time the bishop celebrates with pontificals.

Yes, I forget the seven candles too: in procession and on the altar.

When the bishop arrives he should be given a crucifix to kiss and holy water to sprinkle on himself and those in the greeting party.

Thank you, both of you. I love the ceremonies of Pontifical Mass, and since most bishops can’t or won’t do that, it’s best, in my opinion, to try to transfer some of the ceremonies from one form to the other. According to the rubrics, of course.

If I ever become a bishop…😃

If I ever become a bishop…😃
Speaking of that…like my friend always says (he think’s he’s going to be the pope): “This does not require the usage of “if.” Using “when” is much more appropriate…”

…(he think’s he’s going to be the pope): “This does not require the usage of “if.” Using “when” is much more appropriate…”
You never know! One of my mother’s coworkers is convinced I’m going to become the pope (if I become a priest). 🤷

Apologies, I know some of these were answered above, but for simplicity sake, I’m doing all to avoid scrolling up continuously.

PR= Pontificalis Ritus, 1968
CE = Ceremoniale Episcoporum 1984
What elements of the pontificalia in a Pontifical High Mass in the EF can be licitly used in the OF?

Exempli gratia: episcopal gloves;
Not mentioned, so one *could *say yes. Gloves may be white. (PR 15)
four chaplains in copes with the mitre, crozier, bugia, and book;
There Ceremonail mentions the ministers who assist with the crosier, mitre and book.
The bugia may be used if it is necessary to give light in a dark church. (PR 16)
The assistants may not wear copes. (PR 9, cf. CE 65)
the two mitres, precious and golden;
No, only one may be used. (PR, CE 60)
the gremiale,
Not unless it is needed (PR 16) in a rite (ordination, dedication of church/altar, Holy Thursday are all mentioned in the CE).
pontifical dalmatic
Yes, and certainly is encouraged for more solemn rites (e.g. ordinations, abbatial blessings, etc.) (CE 56). The dalmatic may always be white.
and tunicle;
No. (PR 16)
two assistant deacons in dalmatics;
Yes, the Ceremonial prescribes assistants for the bishop for a number of occasions, especially solemn ones. They wear dalmatics for some; for others, they are vested in choir dress (cassock and surplice). However, priests who assist the bishop in the absence of deacons, may not vest as deacons.
assistant priest in cope
I assume you mean in addition to the assistant deacons - it is not per se forbidden but not mentioned either. One could argue that the cope is not allowed based on the prescription of the Ceremonial that non-concelebrating priest should wear choir dress.
bishop processing into the church before Mass in biretta and cappa magna, then kneeling in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, then vesting in the secretarium
Yes, the Ceremonial covers this (CE 79). But the cappa may only be used on an extremely solemn occasion and within the diocese. (CE 64, also Appendix)

Also, his vestments should not be laid at an altar (PR 21) and the Ceremonial does not foresee vesting in a place other than the sacristy.
during the chanting of Terce;
.

This is a tricky one and I’d probably put it among one of those on-the-fence things. The books per se do not mention it, and say that the bishop should preside at an hour of Daytime Prayer in choir dress (CE 218). The Ceremonial also says that a canonical hour, if not joined with Mass in the manner prescribed in the General Instruction for the Liturgy of the Hours, should be celebrated at some other time (CE 124). Thus it does not seem to anticipate the bishop vesting during Terce.

According to PR 22, if the bishop presides at Terce immediately before Mass, he should be vested in a chasuble. Thus it seems that either: (a) Terce is immediately before Mass, in which case it should be joined with Mass and the bishop vested in chasuble at the beginning of Terce, or (b) Terce with the bishop in choir dress, then vesting, then Mass.
