When did the Elijah Cup for Vocations start? Is it a Roman Catholic acceptable practice? Should the house it goes into be blessed by the parish priest?
Thanks

Not sure exactly when it started, sometime in the 30’s or 40’. It was started by a Lay organization to promote vocations. It’s not a real wide spread practice, but I see noting intrinsically wrong with it. I believe they started doing it again around 5 or 6 years ago.

A side note, Pope John Paul II blessed several Monstrances that are used for the same purpose. Tthey travel the world and are used in Expositions, Benedictions and Prayers for vocations.

In researching the Elijah cup program, Serra is the name of the organization that promotes it. I am wondering if there have been any specific objections to the practice of a purified chalice going home with families for the week? Thanks Mary

The K of C bought a chalice for our parish Elijah Cup program. It was blessed, but never used at Mass. When we have a vocation from our parish, he will get the chalice and we’ll ask the Knights to buy another one 👍 .

No, the homes of those taking the chalice do not have to be blessed.
