Hello!
Code:
I had some JW visitors this past Saturday ... for 3.5 hours. :)

One thing they mentioned on their way out was that Elijah wrote a letter years after he was supposedly assumed into heaven.
What gives?

Peace!!!

2 Chronicles 21:12
Jehoram received a letter from Elijah the prophet, which said: “This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: 'You have not walked in the ways of your father Jehoshaphat or of Asa king of Judah . . .”

Like some Protestants they have some weird ideas.
The Bible shows Elijah carried away into the heavens on a flaming chariot.
However, St. Thomas Aquinas said he was not carried into heaven but a place of happiness. (Perhaps limbo?)
Saint John in one of his epistles tells us to discern all things. Anyone can say something, but why should be be quick to believe whatever people say? If this concerns you, you should ask for solid proof.

Hi!

…there are two possibilities:
  • Elijah wrote the letter but did not make it public
  • the records are not clear/complete–did Jehoram and Jehoshaphat both reigned during Elijah’s ministry?
…however the case, Scriptures do not attest that Elijah wrote and delivered the letter to Jehoram, only that Jehoram received a letter from Elijah!

…be careful about the JW’s; Jesus warned us about the blind leading the blind!

2 Chronicles 21:12
The confusion stems from reading 2 Kings 2:11 and 2 Chronicles 21:12 as if the contents in Kings transpired first followed by Chronicles. It is not. Events in Kings and Chronicles are NOT all in chronologically order. For example David and Solomon are mentioned in Kings as well as Chronicles . Or as some has remarked a chronological mess.

See biblegateway.com/blog/2014/08/chart-of-israels-and-judahs-kings-and-prophets/ for a table outlining the issue.

Ver. 12. Elias. Le Clerc would read Eliseus. Grotius supposes that all passed in a dream. Others think that Elias had written the letter before his removal from the conversation of men, some years before, foreseeing the impiety of Joram, and leaving the letter with Eliseus, to be delivered unto him. (Menochius) (Junius) — But the most common opinion is, that the prophet wrote it in paradise, (Calmet) and sent it to the king by an angel, &c. (Seder. xvii.) (Bellarmine) (Tirinus) — Elias had been taken away in the 18th year of Josaphat, who reigned 25; so he shewed this special care of Joram and his kingdom, so many years after his assumption. (Worthington) — Thus the saints in heaven interest themselves in our defence, 2 Machabees xv. 11. (Haydock) — Prophet. Hebrew, “And there came in him a writing of,” &c. (Calmet)
