My pastor said last week that Elizabeth Elliot had recently converted to Catholicism. Does anybody know if that is true?

I haven’t heard anything about this. Are you sure he’s not confusing her with her brother, Thomas Howard?

Thanks for the reply. Nope, I know about him. We are reading her book “Through Gates of Splendor” in our book club, and it came up in discussion. My pastor heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend, etc., and I thought I would check it out and see if it is truly the case. Some of my friends have been examining Catholicism as an option, recently, as have my husband and I.

I’ve googled this several different ways. Several years ago Ms. Elliott expressed a wish that she had ‘the courage to be Catholic’, according to a blog entry by another Catholic convert. This has raised speculation that she might consider following her brother into the Catholic Church. However, there just is NOTHING publicly posted anywhere that suggests such a conversion has taken place. Even if the news from ‘a friend of a friend’ is true, it has not been made public. This thread may get closed or removed if someone can’t find some sort of public announcement of this: I think forum guidelines proscribe threads on reports of conversions that cannot be publicly substantiated. Just giving you a head’s-up.

this is what i was told by some one who knows her brother tom howard (himself a convert to catholicism).

she did express a desire to become catholic. however, she is married to a baptist and believes strongly in a wife submitting to her husband. so she would not convert without his consent.

she has since began to develop alzheimer’s. therefore, even if she decided to convert, she could not because she would not be deemed to do it with a sound mind.

she did speak privately with many that she love the catholic church and the idea of visible unity of Christianity here on earth.

The discussion of rumors of conversion is not allowed. Thread closed.
