The Seventh Day Adventists have some very talented, committed Christians and have contributed much to health awareness.

Having made the above statement, my advice would be to simply burn the book. The Seventh Day Adventists put a lot of emphasis on dress, not wearing jewelry and vegetarian diets and yet THE OFFICIAL POSITION OF THE CHURCH on abortion IS PRO-CHOICE. They never speak out about the evils of abortion, but talk a lot about observing Saturday as the day of worship.

They have ministers on 3ABN that constantly preach about the Catholic Church and Holy Father being the anti-Christ.

Burn the book and pray for their souls.

As others have said the book should be hurled with velocity into a file 13. Ellen did a masterful job of hiding heretical doctrines in her books. The denomination has some very odd teachings as to Our Lord. Here is how they define Jesus.
Adventist Review and Herald:

Question: Will you please favor me with those scriptures which plainly say that
Christ is a created being ? J. c.

ANSWER: You are mistaken in supposing that S. D. Adventists teach that Christ was ever created. They believe, on the contrary, that he was “begotten” of the Father, and that he can properly be called God and worshiped as such. They believe, also, that the worlds, and everything which is, was created by Christ in conjunction with the Father. They believe, however, that somewhere in the eternal ages of the past there was a point at which Christ came into existence. They think that it is necessary that God should have antedated Christ in his being, in order that Christ could have been begotten of him, and sustain to him the relation of son. They hold to the distinct personality of the Father and Son, rejecting as absurd that feature of Trinitarianisna which insists that God, and Christ, and the Holy Spirit are three persons, and yet but one person. S. D Adventists hold that God and Christ are one in the sense that Christ prayed that his disciples might be one ; i. e., one in spirit, purpose, and

The answer was generated by the Editor of the Adventist Review and reflects the teaching of the denomination. Ellen White codified this teaching when she wrote that God and Christ were “one” in the same manner that Christ and His disciples were “one”. It is understood that God and Jesus were one in spirit, purpose and labor like the disciples were one in spirit, purpose and labor.

“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word; that they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me. And the glory which Thou gavest Me I have given them; that they may be one, even as We are one: I in them, and Thou in Me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that Thou hast sent Me, and hast loved them, as Thou hast loved Me.” John 17:20-23.

Wonderful statement! The unity that exists between Christ and His disciples does not destroy the personality of either. They are one in purpose, in mind, in character, but not in person.** It is thus that God and Christ are one**. {8T 269.4}

Ellen White’s teachings contained in her writings are understood to be infallible wereas faith and morals are concerned and an individual is required to swear an oath of fealty to those teachings when entering into communion with the Seventh-day Adventists. The following is the Fundamental Belief dealing with the prophet Ellen White and can be viewed at the Official Church website.
Seventh day Adventist Fundamental Belief # 18:

One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen. G. White . As the Lord’s messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction. They also make clear that the Bible is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. (Joel 2:28, 29; Acts 2:14-21; Heb. 1:1-3; Rev. 12:17; 19:10.)

The SDA’s will claim they are Bible Only however this is a shibboleth as demonstrated that the points of SDA Faith were established by a magical power claimed by Ellen White whereas it was not Scripture that generated the points of SDA faith but the infallible interpretation of Ellen White over the Scripture considered for the doctrine. Example following;
Ellen White:

We are to be established in the faith, in the light of the truth given us in our early experience. At that time one error after another pressed in upon us; ministers and doctors brought in new doctrines. We would search the Scriptures with much prayer, and the Holy Spirit would bring the truth to our minds. Sometimes whole nights would be devoted to searching the Scriptures, and earnestly asking God for guidance. Companies of devoted men and women assembled for this purpose. The power of God would come upon ME, and I was enabled clearly to define what is truth and what is error. {GW 302.2}

As the points of our faith were thus established, our feet were placed upon a solid foundation. We accepted the truth point by point, under the demonstration of the Holy Spirit. I would be taken off in vision, and explanations would be given me. I was given illustrations of heavenly things, and of the sanctuary, so that we were placed where light was shining on us in clear, distinct rays.

It’s important to remember the Adventist premise when and if you read Ellen White books. Some of them sound very Orthodox when reading however there are heretical teachings cloaked within her texts. A proper grounding on what is true teaching will have these alien concepts literally jump off the page and smack you in the face so it’s best to read material like that in the efforts of apologetics and NOT for a form of devotion.

This is a very gracious reply that should keep peace in the family. Acts of the Apostles is one book in the Conflict of the Ages set. The others are Patriarchs and Prophets; Prophets and Kings; Desire of Ages; Acts of the Apostles;and Great Controversy.

You sometimes do find little gems in these books as EGW ‘borrowed’ from other writers to create these books. Desire of Ages clearly has similarities to Alfred Edersheims works and you would be much better off just reading him.

BTW, Morris Venden had nothing to do with any of the EGW books.
