Embarrassing Failed Prophecies
In her early career Mrs. White made a number of predictions about Christ’s imminent return. The most notable of those was a specific prediction made at a conference of believers in 1856. This statement was later published in the book Testimonies and received widespread attention within the SDA Church. Mrs. White claimed she was shown in vision that some of those present at the 1856 conference would be translated:
Code:
I was shown the company present at the Conference. Said the angel: "Some food for worms, some subjects of the seven last plagues, some will be alive and remain upon the earth to be translated at the coming of Jesus." Testimonies, Vol. 1, p. 131
When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him. Deut. 18:22
Pax vobiscum,

The official Ellen White Estate web site addresses this issue in detail.

Reading about Ellen White’s failed predictions had an interesting effect on me when I was a conservative SDA. For a while I could successfully explain them away in my own mind. But they would keep nagging me… and I’d go back and read about them again… and eventually there came a breaking point where I could no longer believe in EGW as being a true prophet. Long story, but eventually I got into the history of the church, and eventually I discovered the ancient churches, and the doctrines the ancient Christians believed, and I’m here now.

My honest opinion is that probably 75% or more of the anti-EGW information on the internet can be explained away and even refuted effectively by a knowledgeable SDA. Some can explain all of it away, at least in their own minds. But there are those who get broken out of the SDA mold, and I think that’s worth it!

What I believe as an Adventist is not based on anything written by Ellen White, or any other Adventist, but rather what I can read in the Bible.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.
As high as the heavens are above the earth,
so high are my ways above your ways
and my thoughts above your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:7-9

“…for you know neither the day nor the hour”.
Matthew 25:13

I always liked the ones where she said that blacks and Indians were amalgamations of animals and humans. Not something they like to preach about nowadays. But fun to bring up when they attack us.

Jeremiah, I agree with your assertion that a knowledgeable SDA could be able to meet arguments aimed at Ellen G. White with decent answers – I once watched a SDA and a Presbyterian in a debate that ended up getting pretty hot! The SDA seemed to keep a pretty cool head for the most part… but, then again, he did know the SDA church a lot better than the other guy. 😉

In any case, I’m very glad you’re coming home my friend! Congratulations! In all seriousness… I am very happy to hear that you’re listening to the Holy Spirit - speaking to your heart! That’s pretty cool! 😃 Bless you!

May the Lord be with you!

Part of the problem is that the sda’s have cleaned up her image. They omit things she said and doctor pictures of her. For example one they carefully got rid of jewelry she was wearing, so no one could say that since EGW did then they could. You can’t take sda sources at face value.

You misinterpret what she said. She was not talking about cross breeding between humans and animals, she was talking about selective breeding between humans, one race with another, for example, and similar experiments with animals, like people do with cats and dogs, etc.

If you really want to annoy them point out that White’s name adds up to 666. Ergo she is the anti-Christ. I had one object that I was being “insulting”, yet moments before he had been blasting us for being the whore of babylon. He saw no hypocrisy although it was glaringly obvious.

Ellen White made a prediction about the world, particularly the Christian world, coming into unity with Rome. Rome being the “beast” and “antichrist system”…

What this means is that if, for instance, the Catholics and Orthodox were to come back into full communion with each other, the SDA’s would become convinced that their prophecies are being fulfulled, and would be even more sure that SDA’s are the one true remnant church.

To me it looks like the SDA church is an amazing deception! Because while Christian unity would be a sign of the truth to the average person, it would harden the SDA’s in their position.

That’s probably one reason there are so few SDA’s converting to Catholic…

What!!!?? There are photos of Ellen White?? How can that be??

“During the night I was sorely distressed. A great burden rested upon me. I had been pleading with God to work in behalf of his people. **My attention was called to the money which they had invested in photographs. I was taken from house to house, through the homes of our people, and as I went from room to room, my Instructor said, ‘Behold the idols which have accumulated!’” **(Ellen White, Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, Sep. 10, 1901)

“This making and exchanging of photographs is a species of Idolatry. Satan is doing all he can to eclipse heaven from our view. Let us not help him by making picture-idols. We need to reach a higher standard than these human faces suggest. The Lord says, ‘Thou shall have no other Gods before me.’” (Ellen White, Messages to Young People, p. 316)
